It was great actually! :)

Bet you weren't expecting that ^.^
Of course I went straight to the syrians and apparently.. they have been making a lot of improvements with the hamsters.

They have switched most of the mesh wheels out and they are replaced with flying saucers / ss / comfort wheels. Also, there are more

variety of chews and there are now some critter trail tubes for the mice / dwarfs! :) They are also on kaytee lab blocks, which is pretty decent! :)

I'm glad to be seeing some improvements to my local petco! :) Since there aren't many breeders / shelters around here... I'll be hoping to get most of my hamsters from that petco.. as where I got my last two hamsters! ^3^

How are your local petstores doing?

Lol I clicked on this thinking it was going to be a long rant about how your Petco is absolutely horrible

I posted this in a status update a few days ago actually, I love my Petco!! The hams are in 30/40 gallon long tanks, and they are fed Kaytee lab blocks. They are on CareFresh natural. They don't have chew toys though, but I don't think most pet stores provide chew toys. The only thing I don't like is that they are on mesh wheels, but hey, at least they have a wheel(?).

I'm glad some pet stores are making changes, it's refreshing and happy to see animals with good care. :)

My local pets at home (Well.. there's three, so, I guess the one nearest?) is doing very good. They have their hams on carefresh natural bedding, I'm unsure of the food, flying saucers for the robos and hybrids. They have lots of chews in the cages, and are featuring some of the new houses in there for the Chinese. It seemed very well taken care of.

The other two.. not so much. The other two have very rude staff who were very obnoxious, acting like they owned everything. They used their (I think its homebrand?) either scented or softwood bedding, barely anything in the cages, it was quite barren (that applies to both of the pets at homes). At one of the pets at homes, one of the staff members there proceeded to tell me how I shouldn't get one of their hamsters without getting their cages. When I asked why, they said that theirs were perfect for any small pet, rather than tanks don't give enough ventilation. I told them that I had bin cages.. they were clueless. Of course I don't hate the company for that.. just that store. It gave me bad experiences, and that's only one (Yup. .there's more). x

My old one, the closer one, I don't believe sells any animals except for fish, but a new one opened recently, and I like it. The store is awesome in general, but for specifically the small animals, even more specificaller (is that a word?) the hamsters, its pretty good. They get a mix of Kaytee lab blocks and CareFRESH complete, they have flying saucers, CareFRESH natural, probably one inch, with what looked like some shredded colorful paper as nesting material, the Syrians are separated, Ect. Only improvement I could think of is more space than a five gallon tank and the next size up of flying saucer, and it would have been perfect.

Well, what a nice Petco! Here's how mine stacks up...

Cages: 10 Gallon Tank, usually with 4-5 hamsters

Food- Brown's Tropical Carnival *Shiver*

Wheel- Syrian's get 6.5 inch wire mesh wheels, dwarfs 4.5 inch mesh

Water- Always dirty.

Bedding: Mixture of pine and cedar (Double Whammy Respiratory Problems!)

Toys: One small chew and Itty Bitty Igloo both for Syrians and Dwarfs.

Yeah... Pretty sad. The employees aren't the best either.

Ooh! I forgot about the cotton fluff!!!!!!!!

It's sad that some pet stores are better then others :( I wish they all had the equal amount of (good) care! :(

It's nice to see some pet stores are doing good as well though! :) x

One petsmart I went to, one about an hour away from I live, they had really nice and big tanks for the hamsters, at least 30 gallon tanks (Which I found very surprising!)

:D

I'm very phobic of petco and petsmart when it comes to buying pets there. I've heard too many horror stories. However I believe my local petsmart that I frequent is actually pretty good about keeping up their animals - I've never seen a dirty habitat or sickly looking animal. I guess it's a base by base kind of deal thing since you can say the same for your local pet chain.

I was editing my Petco Vlog for YouTube (It's on my channel for you people who want to check it out- link in my siggy) and realized that I was wrong, the don't have wire wheels, they have flying saucers!! So much prouder of my Petco now :D

EDIT- decided to watch through my vid again, and the mice and chinese hamsters have wire wheels. The robos don't though.

My petco is awesome! I got my robocop there and there is only one mesh wheel! But then they still have so called "teddy bear and fancy bear hamsters" there. The care is really great, staff is awesome! (One of the staff let me play with the ferrets :).) Its pretty good. Great new care petco!

I like this topic :) Mine feeds Oxbow, *usually* has mature syrians seperate, and has purple carefresh for the rats..? We have a mixture of mesh, comfort, and silent spinner wheels, and the animals seem to rotate constantly. Sometimes the tiny mice get the 8 inch comfort wheel, sometimes (ok now most of the time) the syrian hamsters do.

My petsmart feeds oxbow and even veggies! But that's about the only good thing mine is doing. D:

I've found that my Petco has been improving a lot as well. They are now using Kaytee lab blocks and flying saucers as well! :)

I'm also really proud to say that the Petsmart I work in no longer sells fluff (much to the disappointment of certain customers, actually--I've gotten complaints at the cash before) and whenever someone bought a hamster, gerbil or other rodent, they always come with a bag of Grrreat Choice aspen bedding ;) Apparently they strongly discourage pine and cedar now!

The only PetCo I have been to, had REALLY great care! The cages were a little bland but here's what they had:

3 inches bedding(CareFresh)

Wooden chews

A couple igloos or hidey huts.

Water bottle

Food dish(Oxbow and Higgins I believe)

Flying saucer or Silent spinner(all of them had 6.5 inch, but the syrians were small, so it sort of worked :/)

Other toy(bridge, cardborad tube or house, cheesy chew, hay, or other toy)

The cages seemed to eb about 20 gallons, but I couldn't measure them as they were built into the wall. :D

Overall PetCo seems to have pretty nice cages! they were housing Syrians together, they looked only about 5 weeks old though. Soem of the info. in the information packets seemed is incorrect, but otherwise, it looks pretty good!
