Yes, most of us, Peruvians tried guinea pigs. I tried once but I didnt know I was eating Cuy (yes, we call them Cuys, not guinea pigs) and it tasted just like chicken, you can't tell the difference. The Incas ate guinea pigs, and also used them as "mystical beings" that can heal sick people. They live more than hamsters, between 3-6 years.

My family breeds guinea pigs but they do not eat them, they sell them. Most of you wrote that its so sad that we eat guinea pigs, but it's our culture... People living in the highlands eat them cuz they dont have enough money to buy food, so they breed the guinea pigs and eat them. They are not the only animals they eat, they also eat Llamas...

I would say we are archaic, (and I included myself) for eating dead animals, wether we eat chicken, fish, or guinea pigs. I think we must change our eating habits... i'm doing it :D Im proud of it

Poor GP's! :'( I could never eat them, but i understand if it's some people's culture. Here in Italy for most people it's perfectly normal to eat rabbits, but i really don't want to eat them. :crybuckets: I see them (both GPs and rabbits) as cute rodents and not food, but i don't think i have the right of criticizing other people for eating them... :undecided:

You know for all of the US people it is the same to them (eating guinea pigs) as us eating a chicken not really anyone cares, about eating chickens, just like in Peru no body really cares about eating a guinea pig. Remember humans are higher on the food chain you can't stop eating guinea pigs in peru or it will mess up the food chain. It is sad, but remember it is just a part of life!

It's just a part of their culture. We do the same thing to pigs, and they're known to make as good of pets as cats and dogs. Whose to say what's wrong and what's right?

I could never eat it though. And I don't eat pork unless my dad makes me, though I do eat other meat. :guilty: Can I help it that I was born an omnivore? But when I grow up I'm eating only organic meat. The animals are treated much more humanely.

Guinea pigs? Discusting, although not too much more than any kind of animal, the only reason people find it so objectionable is because they keep guinea pigs for pets, while hardly anyone objects to eating and wearing cows because so few (who are not raising them for murder) own them. I live in America where animals are looked at as objects...and I am not one of them. I was born vegitarian then became vegan, I am happy I am not exploiting animals. Thousands of years ago many "cultures" sacrificed humans, now it is looked (quite approprietly) as barbaric; maybe in the future we will look at eating animals the same way...as a barbaric and unnessary practice. Already people like to distance themselves from eating animals, if you mention that you do not most carnivores get defencive (carnivores think of hebivores as deprived and herbivores think of carnivores as depraved), that is why beef is called beef and not dead cow or cow corpse. Animals are not the only ones who benifit from vegitarian/vegan diets, studies show that those who eat red meat have a much larger risk of heart attack, and that some cemicals found in fish contribute to cancer. Animals raised for meat consume 75% of our produce resources, were we to use these resources for humans their would be enough food for everybody, no one would starve. But rather millions of animals are only living long enough to sap our resources, then dying to be meat then those who consume the meat are dying of heart attacks and cancer and others are dying because they have nothing to eat. Isn't the world a wonderful place?
