When my local Petco had their race, I entered my little Pipsqueak. I live in a small town, and that reflected on the amount of people there. There were 2 little girls, maybe 9 years old? And myself. That was it. When I had to get Pip into her ball, it was silent except for the sound of the birds in their enclosure. I had to actually wake her up, it was calm and quiet enough. She won the race, and there were no screams or loud cheering. It really just depends on where and how well you trust your hamster. Pip did absolutely FINE and she showed ZERO signs of being stressed. If anything, she was upset that I had to hold her ball until the race started! She was trying to run, not escape. She got a nice treat afterwards, and even though we won, I gave the prize to the 2nd place winner. You guys really don't have to bash something when you only have one side. I say it's OK for me in my small town with a carefree ham, but if you live somewhere that you KNOW is going to be bad, then don't.

That makes me feel a little better. I'm glad to see that it isn't always loud and stressful for the hamsters. I just feel bad for those hamsters who don't live in that small town where you do. That race sounded more fun than the ones that are full of screaming kids and all the quick movements.

I believe that racing hamsters is down right cruel. Hamsters are forced to race, and cannot do anything about it. Also, trapping them in a tiny plastic ball with slits for ventilation is not right... People cannot force animals to do something for entertainment... like at circuses.. Imagine what happens after the animals are done with the show... they are forced into a cart to go to their next show... Animals have their own mind and we cannot change that. Thank you for reading  :innocent:

If you think this is cruel why post it? On if HH's rules is not posting videos of animal cruelty. I'm also kind of stuck in the middle on this. No the aren't forced to race, the run if they want to and don't have to. Everyone has different opinions on hamsters balls and someone thinks they're okay respect there opinions. Hamster balls aren't going to kill the hamster after all.

I'm not saying the hamster balls are cruel. I'm saying the racing is.

I mean other people were saying that hamster balls are cruel and yah. Also if you haven't read the rules one of the rules here is not to post videos of animal cruelty not to say it is cruelty myself but if you think something is don't post it.

I'm going to repeat what was said earlier. It comes down to the hamster, their abilities, and their personality. They aren't truly forced to race, they don't really have to run. "Trapping" them isn't quite what always happens. I opened up Pip's ball after she had won (which took about 4 minutes, start to finish) and I had to pull her out of the ball (gently of course). She didn't want to be done with her ball. We don't force them to do things for our entertainment. I didn't make her run, I wasn't even enjoying the event really. I do understand your thing with circuses though. They do have their own minds, therefore they have their own choice. If they want to run in their hamster ball, why stop them because it's "cruel"? I get that in big cities and stuff like that they have lots of kids, sudden movements, loud noises, but how many of us truly live in big cities?

I liked the idea before you made those points I failed to see before! Thanks for pointing those things out!

Not to change the topic too much, but I heard when greyhounds get too old to race, they put them to sleep rather than adopting them out.

That's only true dependent on the area... there are plenty of ex-racing greyhound shelters and plenty of greyhounds that fill them.

I live not too far out from Atlanta, Georgia. There are quite a few people. But, there are some smaller cities around the state where it would be quieter. If there are hamster races here in Georgia, I hope they take place in a smaller, quieter, city where the hamsters can run without being yelled at.

For me, it all depends if you and your hamster like the hamster ball, and the petstore is not too loud.

Hamster raing can be very fun for the people and the hamster ... only if you do it right. There are a number of thing to consider if you are going to try this and befor you dismiss it as crule.

    1. first off if your hamster doesn't like running in a ball at home then don't bother trying races. If he is like mine, on the other hand, and you have trouble getting him out because he likes it so much then why not give it a shot.

     2. You definatly need a travel cage for your hammie (DO NOT bring him in his ball) it should have a drip proof water bottle if it can hold one or a slice of cucumber a little larger than you would normaly give him for hidration. It should also have some of his normal food mix scattered around the floor. maby a hide away if it fits but nothing heavy that could tip or fall on him and hurt him.

    3. Keep a close eye on your hamster at all times weather he is on his ball or the travel cage; There will be kids there who may not know how to be gental (I've seen them try to kick hamster balls)

4.Only bring completly tame hamsters as this would be very stressfull for one who is wary of people. Keep in mind if he jumps or you need to scoop him up suddenly you don't want him jumping away or bitting you.

    5. most improtant watch your hamsters behavior: if he doesn't want to run don't leave him in the ball waiting for him to run. If he is stressed from noise or the smell of other hamsters leave or step away so he can relax. If he enjoys the run and you had fun too then come back and do it again.

If you are interested in seeing a hamster race petco has one on occasion and you could stop in and see what its all about and if its something your hamster might enjoy. If you have any doutes about any of those things it might not be for you and your hamster.

One of my hamsters absolutly loves to explore in his ball and he shares a room with an other syrian (seperate cages of coarse) so their smell no longer bothers him; I havn't tried this with hime but it might be something he would like so i might try it some day. I just want a chance to watch at the place I would take him to first.

AAAAHH!! The store in all the videos is my local Petco! Wow, that really sucks. All of the hamsters have tiny balls... And I've walked through that store several times *shudders*. I guess it's probably because the Petco corporate office is in my town... Petco is everywhere.
