Hamsters aren't dogs. Dogs aren't put into balls with little air circulation. Hamster balls are very disorientating. How does having dog races make it okay to have hamster races? While I don't really agree with dog racing ( agility is fine, but not like greyhound racing IMO), you can't compare hamster racing to dog racing.

I think it's really bad for the hams. As i said, hamster balls are disorientating, so imagine what loads of strangers yelling sounds like in there? There's also loads of unfamiliar hamsters and people, it must be very stressful. And as krazykelly said, it makes people think they can do what they want with hamsters. :(

Well we all have our own opinions.and they do a lot of bad things to those dogs sometimes

most big chained pet stores do this because they know it will cause stress to them and could kill them so they do this so the owner will most likely get a new hamster from that same store  which makes money for the store. i know it sound cruel but its the truth,my cousin worked in equipet which it based is ireland and after she heard how cruel petstores are to the poor animals she quit.Im not saying all pet stores do this its just the majority. for this reason i agree in adopting animals from shelters and rescues

I'm glad to see that people find this a pretty bad idea. If people want to do something like this, they can think of something different. Like a maze they can go through in their ball and the fasted time wins. But people need to be quiet. The way the kid in the video was waving and screaming at the one hamster probably stressed it out so it was too scared to run. We can't stop them, but what we can do is not allow our friends or family to attend them or bring their hamsters to this.

It sounds like something borderline cruel to do to hamsters, and I would definitely agree that it causes a lot of stress and that it spreads the belief that hamsters are toys that you can essentially 'do what you want with'. It creates an unhealthy environment for the hamsters to be in for even a short amount of time, and I really don't see why on earth you'd want to do something like that to those poor animals. In terms of dog racing, I know that there are a lot of people out there fighting for it to be stopped and banned, because it is considered to be extremely cruel to the dogs, which it definitely is. I won't go into detail, but dog racing is certainly just as bad as hamster racing, if, honestly, not worse for the dogs, in my opinion, at least. Agility, HTM, Flyball, Working trials etc. are all great ways to bond with your dog, and work with them, but none of them are actually dog racing, and the two things can never be compared in any form, to be honest.

I think the best way to stop it is probably to spread the word about how bad it is, and to persuade friends and family to boycott the races, as well as doing so yourself, and ask them to pass the message on. Maybe if enough people refuse to show up, they'll have no choice but to stop, since there won't be an audience there for them anymore, and people will realise what something like that really does to their hamster, in terms of stressing them out, etc. not to mention all of the potential dangers, such as the hamster being dropped and badly injured, for example.

When my local Petco had their race, I entered my little Pipsqueak. I live in a small town, and that reflected on the amount of people there. There were 2 little girls, maybe 9 years old? And myself. That was it. When I had to get Pip into her ball, it was silent except for the sound of the birds in their enclosure. I had to actually wake her up, it was calm and quiet enough. She won the race, and there were no screams or loud cheering. It really just depends on where and how well you trust your hamster. Pip did absolutely FINE and she showed ZERO signs of being stressed. If anything, she was upset that I had to hold her ball until the race started! She was trying to run, not escape. She got a nice treat afterwards, and even though we won, I gave the prize to the 2nd place winner. You guys really don't have to bash something when you only have one side. I say it's OK for me in my small town with a carefree ham, but if you live somewhere that you KNOW is going to be bad, then don't.

I know what you're talking about, the petco hamster ball derby. I would never do that to a poor little hamster. Hamsters shouldn't really be in balls. What if the lid fell off and they escaped in a pet store?! That would suck.
