In terms of having a real-life or Skype (or whatever other internet chat media) meet-up, I really think its a great idea.
OBVIOUSLY whatever detail you posted would be up to you and no liability whatsoever could go to HH, but this doesn't mean it's a bad idea.
I've been a member os various forums for many years and have had a number of meet-ups, both small-scale (2 or 3 people) and large scale (10+ people), all of which have been great. In addition to this, people I know from forums plus people from online games I play all communicate on a daily basis on Skype via voice chat. It's a really really great experience.
Bear in mind for Skype calls, you don't have to give out any information about yourself. Aside from this, of course I would advise you take the regular precautions with regards to your safety.

In terms of meeting, it really does help if there's a pre-arranged event you are visiting, eg. the California Hamster Association show: if a bunch of you all decided to go to that, it would be easy to say "anyone from HH who wants to, meet near the entrance at 1pm!" or whatever. I've certainly done this when I was meeting guild mates (from online gaming!) in real life for the first time. We all were going to a festival in Hyde Park with our own friends/family, and decided beforehand to meet up if we wanted to by one of the main tents at lunchtime. I ended up seeing 8 or so people there that I'd only ever chatted to online before, and we are still all friends to this day. In fact, we are meeting up again this summer at one of the guys' apartment in France ![]()
