It's carried in up to 100% of rats. Adopting rather than shopping is still good, but it's not like adopting will give you a rat without the disease. Also, he died two weeks after the rat was purchased, and in that time, a LOT of warning signs will pop up, and you should see that a doctor would be a good choice LONG before two weeks can pass. It's a bacteria, and therefore, a 2 week round of antibiotics (don't do this unless they have a URI or something that needs antibiotics to fix) will eliminate it from the rat. This story is very sad, yes, but you must remember, you WILL get warning signs that you have contracted the disease long before you're at the deadly phase.
