Was the rat infected with rat bite fever or was the boy infected and died from a normal rat bite? I scanned the article and cannot find the answer.

You nailed it! It is tragic but if stuff like that didn't happen, this wouldn't be life. Despite that, I still feel sorry for him

Attention Span = 0 This doesn't surprise me at all Pet-co's rats were infected.

Yeah I wouldn't suggest buying any animals from Petco.

Since this has been revived, I'll add in another bit of information. There's no way the suit will ever end with Petco losing. Ever. I have recently found Pipsqueak's purchase papers from Petco, dated 5/19/13, and on the back, among all the possible diseases, it lists RAT BITE FEVER. It lists what it is, what carries it, and how it is contracted. It states to consult a physician if you have been bitten by a rat, says physician can diagnose RBF. It says that rats will not show signs of anything when carrying the bacteria. It also has a list of things you should do (or not do) to stay as safe as possible with your new companion. At the bottom of this list, it has a link to the CDC website and the Petco animal care sheets. It's sad but the boy died, but it was 99% on the family, 1% on Petco (they sold the rat, so they can't be blameless.)
