Wow.. I am really about to laugh. Crittertrails?!? Where did he get that from?! A fish? lol. I think he is to stupid to work there. He can't just take away something for YOUR hamster! If anything I would have bossed him around until I got kicked out and he got the facts straight! Sorry, he is just too stupid!

Yeah, once when I was at Petco, we were looking for a new wheel and this lady showed them to us so she got the mesh, the flying saucer, and the silent spinner. She recommended the mesh one but I was like "ummmm, I'll take the flying saucer" "okay" she said like I was making a huge mistake. So we went up to pay and that lady was even worse. She said her mesh wheel used to squeak so at night she used to put paper clips on it so her hamster couldn't run at night. I mean, wow.   :undecided: Hamsters are supposed to run at night.

My theory is that you should NEVER walk into a pet store not knowing exactly what you DON'T want. Browsing is fun, but you should know what you shouldn't get. A friend of mine was recommended a crittertrail too- not knowing better, she bought it, and I haven't been able to convince her that it's a bad environment.

That said, I personally have had great experiences with Petsmart (although I haven't bought a hamster there; I'll get to that in a minute). We bought three mice there. The employee was nice, knew the personality of each mouse, and could recommend which ones would be tamest (although we didn't follow her advice on one mouse, and indeed, that mouse is the least tame). We planned to put three in a 10 gallon. The pet store employee was very adamant that this was not acceptable, and we could only have 2 mice if we got a 10 gallon. She won and we bought a 20 gallon- and seeing how big they've gotten, I'm glad we did.

I had a similar experience at Petco with my hamster.

I take everything they say with a grain of salt, but overall I like Petsmart.

i have never had a bad experience at my local petsmart i feel as they are much nicer and willing to help than my local petco.. i went in the other day to petco and needed to restock on the selective for hamsters but they sadly only had for it for mice there.. so i thought well ill just go ask an employee to just be sure they didnt have some lying around in the back or something.. so the lady goes and asks the person that is in charge of restocking and as soon as i turn the corner to enter the conversation i saw him rolling his eyes at me like i was some needy,  annoying customer or something.. and he told me "i know what i have back there i dont need to go back there and check we dont have it"..so he didnt even go check for me .. maybe they didnt have it maybe they did..

it just made me feel uncomfortable ..and what was strange was that same day i had forgotten to get my cats litter and i ran in that same day but at night so probably 4 hours later.. and i happen to just glance over and WHOAH there it was on the shelf.. like really? lol!

Some pets arts are good, like mine. They have proper care- solid wheels, separated Syrians, good food, big cages, careFRESH bedding, etc.

When I got my 20GL they asked what for, I said for a hamster. They said, "Wow, that's so nice! You sure got one lucky little hamster." Exact quote.

Not all petsmarts or let stores are bad, some are good.

But... On the other hand, my petco stinks. They have almost everything wrong- except for the fact that hamsters are cute and they know the difference between Syrians and dwarfs. D:

I feel like I'm the only one who likes petco! my pet smart keeps their reptiles in 12x12x12 tanks while my petco keeps them in ten gallon tanks and the larger and animals get 20 longs. All of the small pets are in 20 longs. They keep their hermit crabs with salt and fresh water and high humidity, which says something. Pet smart keeps them on freaking pine shavings with one freshwater bowl.

I don't know if someone already said this, but PetSmart actually has a 14 day gaurantee, not 7... Also that employee must have been full of himself. We only refuse sales if an absolute idiot who knows nothing about a pet comes in. Trust me, I'd love to void more sales for people that put Syrians in Crittertrail Ones and hermit crabs in "animal prisons" as I like to call them, but the company strives for customer service an business just as much as pet care... But I have never heard of voiding the agreement which you signed when you got your hamster... That is rude and also probably against PetSmart policy. If I ever did anything *remotely* close to that, I'd get my butt kicked.

That is just ridiculous... Once I corrected an employee and he told me I was wrong about cotton fluff cuz he overheard me saying, and  got the vet out to check it and he said it was "more harm than good" and I should stick to normal bedding LIKE I ALREADY WAS!!! (take THAT!)

I live an hour away from the closest Petsmart, and two hours from another Petsmart. The Petsmart closest to us has this one guy who works in the fish section, I wish I remembered his name. Every time we go there we always talk to him. When I told him I wanted two Robo Dwarf's, he gave me advice that was actually TRUE. I was so surprised because usually they try to sell us these little crittertrail cages, fluff bedding, etc. We also buy our fish there and we will only deal with him.

Now, at the other Petsmart by my old house, they are very stand-offish and rude. I went there with my best friend when I was upgrading my turtle, Nemo, into a fifty-five gallon tank. I wanted to get 5 Giant Danios, and 5 goldfish. He wouldn't sell me the goldfish because they "make too much of a mess."  Also, if you tell them what you are buying stuff for, for example when I had Annie in the 55 gallon tank, and a inch in diameter turtle in a 20 gallon tank, he tried to lecture me about having a turtle in a small tank, and how he hamster had "too much room" and he recommended a crittertrail cage. Annie is a Syrian. :(.

Overall, I think it really does depend on the location of the Petsmart, and if you get a worker that is truly passionate about animals. When I turn 18, Petsmart is the first place I'm applying too, so hopefully I can help to educate people who come in clueless.

I have to disagree with some of the posters here and say that, if you don't know much about animals and aren't prepared to educate yourself then you should not be working in a store that deals with animals. There are plenty of people out there who are passionate about animals and would like a job in Petsmart, etc. Why on earth should they lose out on a job so that someone who couldn't care less about the animals they are selling can be employed?

Really, it's not the employees fault. It's the manufacturers that make the small cages. Could you imagine if a worker said to thier boss, " No, I refuse to sell critter trails, they are too small. " What would happen then? You can't blame someone for doing their job. Now, that employee did seem awkward, and yes I would have been annoyed, but not at the fact he was trying to sell me a critter trail, the facts that he was being rude. But if we're going to blame anyone , I don't think it should be the people who have no control over the cages that are made and bought, and the people who are only doing what they're told to avoid going out if a job.
