I was just wondering why there's a separate section dedicated to Singapore and hamsters. It's not just on this site, but several other forums I visited before I hunkered down here had sections for Singapore as well. (By no means am I complaining, I'm just SUPER curious)

Is it harder to find hamster supplies there? Are they illegal? Is the environment massively different that special arrangements need to be made for hamsters?

I honestly DON'T KNOW, and would LOVE for someone to explain this to me. (:

Thanks!

Not exactly.

If i remember correct , our admin is Dusty. Dusty resides in Singapore so when this was created, I like to
think that this was tailored to that specific location before branching out into our current Hamster Hideout.
Singapore and other parts of asia are very well known for their abundance of hamsters due to it is where
the hamsters have originated from. ^_^

As Mika has explained, Dusty, HH's creator is from singapore, so it started with singaporeans commenting before to expanded to other parts of the world. there's like a small corner for the locals here but its not very active... :/

we're a very small country, where travelling from one end to the other end by car is like 1hr tops?.. so yeah, and with a population of 5.3 million ppl living in such a small space, things are very cramped.. even shops are all nearby each other so getting hamster supplies is very easy. just that it may take a longer time to source for cheaper supplies. the ham stuff found here is also quite limited, and very different from what can be found in US or UK :(..

hmm, the weather is also different?.. its sunny all year round with no snow and no natural disasters.. humidity is 80-90% most of the time.. houses here are very tiny due to the limited space, and an average 2 storey house like in the US or UK will cost a few million here.

nope, hamsters are not illegal here, but animals like hedgehogs, snakes, sugar gliders are considered as exotic pets and is illegal to be kept as pets in singapore. but yet, ppl still smuggle them in from neighboring countries like Malaysia.. and stupidly try to sell them online -.- also, its not common for rats or mice to be kept as pets here in SG. but other small animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas are fairly common in households Posted Image

in fact, hamsters are very much over populated here in SG that ppl dump them at bus stops, lift lobbies, next to the trash cans at train stations in plastic bags or shoe boxes. MANY OF THEM. and those who are fortunate to be found are either still very young, like my current fosters, or some may even be pregnant. like my previous fosters which gave birth to 5 pups in a week when i was fostering her.

and yet, ppl are simply breeding them by putting a male and female in the same cage, "for fun" or "to look at cute babies". and they wont care if they are siblings or related.. with the limited space in this country, they are kept in travel cages for the rest of their lives, like cages that are smaller than a 1ft tank. just a water bottle and sunflower seeds scattered in the floor. and when u give them advice to upgrade to a bigger tank, they get angry and ask u to <cheese> off -.-. and dont even bother to ask them to bring their hamster to a vet when they are sick. many people will rather let it die than pay 5 times more for the vet bills :(.

well, thats most of them. of course, there's a small hand full of people who really love and care for their hamsters! and will do anything to let them have a happy and long life, just like the ppl here of HH Posted Image
