On the same day I got my mice, I also picked up some African dwarf frogs :) They're small (about 1.5 inches long), aquatic frogs and totally adorable! I got them from a woman who was going away for 3 weeks and didn't have anyone to look after her tank, so she was giving them away. She asked me if I wanted her catfish, but I politely declined because I know nothing about her!

I got them primarily for myself, but I'm going to teach my brother how to look after them so he can maybe have them when I leave home :) Right now, they live in a little tank that holds about 3.5 gallons I think. Most say you only need a gallon per frog, but I want them in something bigger eventually. The tank I was going to put them in needs resealing, and I don't want to put them in the 30 gallon I just bought because they're so shy that I'd never see them! But when they're in a bigger tank, I might add some guppies. They're feeding on frozen bloodworms right now, but I'm still looking into food options. I know they eat guppy fry, but I'm not sure if letting them eat live babies is cruel (I have to say, I know very little about fish) so... I'm figuring that out!

So anyways, their names are Thor and Loki (if you don't love The Avengers, you're crazy!), but it's so hard to get good photos of them! This is the only one I have so far, of Thor (I think, they look identical to me!) looking totally adorable:

Haha I know, it's a lot at once! I didn't plan on getting the frogs and the mice this close together, but that's how it managed to work itself out. Took me months to find these frogs up for sale/adoption, and months to find the mice too, so I didn't want to turn anything down :)

So I actually have 7 now - the 3 hammies, 2 mice and 2 frogs :D Doesn't seem like as many because of the mice living together and the robos living together. And I justify it because the two frogs are shared with my brother :cheeky: Oddly enough, my best friend just brought her total up to 7 too - 3 cats, 2 hammies and 2 new bunnies. Weird coincidence :)

Going to pretend I don't know what you're talking about, just pretending it doesn't exist now!

It does exsist. Theres no escaping it. Its all real...

I heard something about another pratice tonight? Maybe another billion pounds spent on fireworks...

Anyway, I will stop derailing your thread with nonsence about the "o" word.

Random question, but do (can) you handle the frogs?

Congrats! From what I remember most people felt they did well in about 10 gallons of water if you had 2-4 of them. I've always loved these little guys, but I've never gotten any myself.

As per your guppy question a lot of fish owners do let their other fish free feed over guppy fry. Including the mother (good protein after that ordeal actually). It's sort of a personal thing as to whether you find it cruel. Some see it as a necessary thing and leaving the adults in as the easier way to it where as others see it as population control.

Oh god, not another one :( I was thinking the same thing about the money though, good fireworks cost a fortune!

Since they live in water 24/7 (they only come up for air once in a while) it's best not to handle them because they can dehydrate quickly out of water, and it can stress them out. You can handle them to take them out of the water though. It's just not recommended unless necessary.

The tank I have that needs resealing is about 8 gallons, debating on whether I should reseal this one or just buy a new one. I'll probably just buy a new one because I'm lazy and I'll be able to get a nice 20-gal or so, so I have lots of space for guppies too!

It doesn't seem inherently cruel to me, but I wasn't sure if that was just because I know little about fish. I did Google it a while back, and most people agreed that feeding fry is usually necessary to keep the numbers down. I guess I'll decide when it comes to getting guppies and choosing the genders!

Oh, I was getting quite confused when mentioning about keeping feesh in with them! I just assumed that frogs are semi aquatic as you regulary see them by the side of ponds and that. Well, they say you learn something new everyday!

Have you got a picture of the tank? Got me all intrigued!

I think most frogs are only semi-aquatic Posted Image ADFs and African Clawed Frogs are the only two I personally know of that aren't!

Haven't got one yet, I'll take one tomorrow but I must warn you, it's very boring! Especially since it's recommended that you don't put anything at the bottom of the tank. If you use gravel, the bloodworms can slip through, and if you use sand they can ingest it when eating (they're "bottom-feeders") which isn't very healthy of course. But if I decide to use a different food which wont slip through the gaps, I'll add some gravel! Right now they've only got two (fake) plants in there and no ornaments, because every time I go to Wilkinsons they're all cracked up! Tomorrow is my day off though, so I'm going to pop off to Pets at Home and get some cute things for them to hide in. I want to set up another tank with some live plants (and no fish), so I can get the hang of maintaining them, and then maybe add them to the frog tank Posted Image

I wonder if they miss their old tank-mates... They lived with guppies, mollies, a cat fish and I think some other things before, and I know they're a community anima;. I don't even know if they will remember the other fishies now though! I think when I put them in a bigger tank, I might also add some very tiny aquatic snails (I believe they're called Ramshorns).

Oh thats quite intresting! Better not actually do any research otherwise I will end up wanting some myself!

It don't matter if the tank is boring! It is intresting to see how different animals live. Some need plain open spaces, others need closed in. I do have to say that I really don't like Wilkinsons for feesh stuff. I find a lot of its tacky. Good luck getting to pets at home! Whilest your there, fancy picking me a water bottle? I really don't fancy travelling!

No word of a lie, I actually bought 18 mouse-sized water bottles the other day. You're welcome to have one of them if you want :cheeky: I'll probably be better off walking to P@H than getting the bus!

I'm the worst when it comes to researching, every time I find a new animal I'm like "omg this is so cool .... *research* .... *research* ... *research* ... OMG I NEED THIS ANIMAL". Hope I never get rich, I'll end up overrun with them.
