Iceberg lettuce is not considered to be a nutritional fresh food for hamsters. It is high in water content and low in fibre and nutritional value.

sharma & foxxy, iceberg lettuce has way too much water content in it. a steady diet of this will eventually cause diahrrea and a something called "intussusception" which is when the intestines literally turn in on themselves. there is no cure, and it's fatal.

remember that in the wild, hamsters eat only [mostly] dry grasses (like timothy-hay dry). their stomachs are not meant to handle really watery foods & this is why it will make them very sick.

Intussusception is "a rare blockage or twisting of the intestine, which can be life threatening." One of the causes is believed to be long-term diarrhea. (Source).

Including this lettuce as the bulk of your hamster's diet can also pose further problems as it is low in fibre.

a hamster's digestive tract NEEDS high-fiber foods for the best functioning...

but low-fiber foods such as iceberg are digested immediately in
the hamster's digestive tract, requiring little work. over time, this reduces the amount of "good" digestive bacteria in the hamster's
intestines, and this eventually causes diarrhea, sometimes chronic.

on the other hand, high-fiber greens ...(along with dry timothy hay, which is as good as those fresh greens),
require more time for the hamster to digest, and stay in the digestive
tract longer. this creates more "good" digestive bacteria. that's why these are better!

While a few pieces of iceberg lettuce will not do severe harm to your hamster, it is still not a nutritional fresh food, some better ideas are dark greens such as spinach, arugula, kale, dandelion. More information on safe and unsafe foods can be found here: Hamster Food List.

A common misconception whenever diarrhea is mentioned is that any hamsters with diarrhea has or will catch wet tail. This is not the case.

Iceberg lettuce doesn't cause wet tail (nor do other greens). Wet tail is a bacterial disease, it is caused by the Lawsonia intracellularis bacteria or the Campylobacter bacteria. Wet tail is treated with antibiotics. How would antibiotics cure wet tail if it was caused by the high concentration of water in lettuce? If you google the scientific name of wet tail (proliferative ileitis), you can find a lot more information about it.

Too many greens CAN cause regular diarrhea, but as always, moderation is the key. If your hamster isn't used to greens, feeding them a whole leaf of lettuce may cause them problems (more so than other greens because of the water value), but nothing a strict diet can't solve!

Too much can cause diarrhea, yes. But it cannot cause wet tail. Wet tail is a bacterial disease with the main symptom being diarrhea. Water foods do not cause wet tail itself.

No, it cannot. Christmas_hamster is right.

"Wet tail" is not just "the hamster's bottom is wet from diarrhea." Wet tail is a devastating disease that literally destroys the hamster's intestines. The more official name for wet tail is proliferative ileitis. The hamster's intestines develop sores, and its entire body basically just shuts down. It is a horrible disease that very few hamsters survive.

The reason that proliferative ileitis is called "wet tail" is that with proliferative ileitis, the hamster often gets very, very severe diarrhea that soaks its bottom. However, it is possible for a hamster to have severe diarrhea without having the actual disease known as wet tail. Basically, a hamster's tail can get wet from diarrhea, but that doesn't mean it has "wet tail." It's confusing, I know. Posted Image

Iceberg lettuce (assuming it's not contaminated) cannot cause proliferative ileitis. It is, as Christmas_hamster said, caused by a bacteria. However, iceberg lettuce can cause severe diarrhea.

I wouldn't dismiss good information like that. ;) Part of being a good pet owner is knowing about your pet. Sometimes we are misinformed and instead of spreading the misinformation we should be working hard to learn the truth and spreading that instead so that animals all over can benefit from their owners being better informed.

Why is that? Everyone makes mistakes. What is important is that they learn from them. Helping people and sharing good information is important in the pet keeping world. If we didn't share and help others than no one would learn and there would be a lot more animals suffering due to the ignorance of their owners. Don't fret over one little mistake, as I said we all make them. Everyone has something more that they can learn about their pets, that part never ends. Just keep learning and your hamsters will benefit. :)

Think of it as the difference between a human having diarrhoea because they've eaten a lot of watery food, or they've had spicy food etc etc and a human having diarrhoea because of food poisoning.
Both are diarrhoea, but only one is caused by bacterial infection.

And don't worry that you made a mistake :) We are all learning new things every day, which is why it's so good to be here, then you can pass on what you learn to others :D
