I got my Syrian at Petco and they had him alone, the males and females separated, and the two young Syrians (who'd the employee had told me would be separated when they were older the first time I came in) had in fact been separated with no sign of injuries. There was no sign of any illness that I could find. The employee recommended against the pet store recommended brands in order to not let me buy something that would harm my hamster. Rather than trying to make a sale at any cost, she actually seemed to care about the hamsters and had me come back several times before she thought a hamster would get along well with me. (Not as rude as it sounds, she was really nice and not pushy.) At my Petsmart, too, Syrians are alone as far as I can tell. I didn't see any sign of illness. When we bought the mice the employee wanted us to buy a proper sized tank rather than a smaller tank or cage, and didn't pick up the mice by their tails. From what I've been seeing around the internet, it seems that the quality of pet stores is rare... :(
