Woah this is old. But eh, I guess it's gernal discussion, and I'd like to throw my useless two pennies into it.

Uhmm.
Yeah, I saw that on like Oprah (don't judge, yes I tune into Oprah when... my mom does :cheeky: ), awhile back. That chick whose face was taken off by a monkey. Well. Duh. Animals of any shapes and sizes, breeds and native locations are capable of human bodily harm. It doesn't take a lot to reconcile with that. Even dogs that are claimed "trained" can act agressive, because no amount of "training" can take natural instinct out of a wild animal. Agression is something that most domesticated animals do not act on, unless it is to defend themselves, their young, and in some cases their owners. You may have heard of dogs being trained for intentionally harming other animals or people, pit bulls are ofte associated with this. Uh, hi. They're dangerous, and this is something that can be done in any home at anytime. So. They're allowed, but smaller, less threatening animals aren't?

I say less because, as small a hamster, rabbit, gerbil, degu, lemming is... they can still potentially harm humans. Whether it'd be through a bite, which may seem harmless but... if it's carrying a disease you may not think so anymore.

So, I think it's stupid they're so concerned about banishing small animals like hamsters, in a way. Dogs and cats really aren't native to America, correct me if I'm wrong. So, even that statement in itself is pretty much... WRONG.

So, I guess this serves to the point. All you guys can go into your back yards and keep the rattlesnakes you find, but don't keep your hamsters!
IT doesn't mention reptiles of any sort, but snakes of all sorts are NATIVE to the US, so. Haha. Catch my drift? x)

Well, back I'd be livid if they banned hamsters... And now I would just be sad for everyone I know who loves their hamsters and would hate to see them go. I just hope they don't banish cats... Banishing cats and dogs would be stupid stupid stupid... They're like the major two pets in the world.... I think that it would be the dumbest law ever... I mean, why, just why? Why would you ban all but two kinds of pets? Also, why ban fish? What harm can a FISH do?

It was for any future new species or for species that were relatively new if I understood it correctly. Pets such as hamsters wouldn't even be touched, as they are practically normal in north america now, as pets.

And yeah... it's American. >.>

Your hamsters are more likely to get sick from contact with humans than you are from contact with hamsters. ;)

It's hard enough for me to comprehend what this bill is trying to say (it's summer, give me a break!), so I'm not going to try to interpret it...

ANYWAY, here in NJ I think for turtles you have to have some kind of certificate or some kind of proof that you are using the turtle for like classwork or studying it, you know? ( Someone said something similar in CA ^^ )

I highly doubt hamsters are going to get banned.... They keep breeding & breeding them in pet stores so I think it's highly unlikely that hammies will get banned. That would be terrible if they actually managed to do so however.. </3

I probably made no sense ^^

This bill is NOT about banning current domestic normal species. This is about avoiding future disasters from species that could easily overtake a place and destroy the habitats and safety. The reason hamsters, gerbils, etc were not listed, is because there was simply not enough room or time for them to scrape through every little critter in the pet store and say yay or nay in the bill itself. This bill is likely to be more effective regionally than nationally, though likely national for some species. I can 100% guarantee you hamsters, guinea pigs etc will not be banned. Any species that is likely to be banned is probably one that has already destroyed an environment somehwere (gators, certain frog species).

Where I live we have a huge problem, some people thought it was clever to turn loose a bunch of bull frog pets in the local rivers. It wiped out one native frog species and killed off 90% of another which is just barely making a come back, but they cant reintroduce it to the rivers since the bullfrogs are still there. If you want to see an INSANE example look at florida. How many people let loose reptilian like creatures iguanas and snakes that now run rampant? That place is a hot house for pets gone dangerously wild.

Most states already have rules banning certain species, hamsters are not banned from any of them as domesticated hamsters (likely aside from maybe one species) cannot survive in the wild, not even for a week. Even if a single one managed it would have to have a mate, even if they successfully reproduced in the wild the pups would not survive.

They are also looking for pets that provide a consistent danger to humans over all. A few incidents (freak in nature) will not cause a species to be banned, it would take a great potential with repetitive proof of danger (chimps, tigers, wolves etc would fall under this category, not hamsters).

To compile a list of animals very likely to be banned

peacocks
crocodiles
alligators
tigers
lions
species of large snakes
amphibians who pose a lethal risk to the native amphibian species (small frogs are likely fine, bullfrogs however are natural destroyers)..

Personally I would LOVE to see cats on the list, sorry to any cat lovers, but cats are one of THE most destructive pet species you can own, mostly if they are outside cats. They will go out and hunt and kill anything they can find, not for the food but for the fun. They often kill whole nests of baby birds or a mother protecting a nest. They will kill anything and everything and they are allowed to roam at their own will to do so. I feel like cats very much need to be held to the same standards as dogs... it stays in the yard or the pound can come take it and fine you. Of course maybe I am a bit more biased than I used to be since my neighborhood has cats and they love to poop in my front and back yard since my house was vacant prior to me moving in. Cat feces and saliva is so disgusting and dangerous, I feel like taking my dog around and letting him poop in the front yards of everyone who owns cats in the area and just waiting for them to complain.

If its an outside cat you can pretty much be assured its going out everyday to kill things. While you may not see it happening or have corpses dropped on your doorstep, its happening, its how the cats entertain themselves outdoors... Once again, sorry to cat lovers, I had an indoor cat in the past and know several people with indoor cats who are sweet as pie and I love them to death but outdoor cats just rub me the wrong way..

Myxi: You cannot blame cats for what comes naturally to them. If we blame cats for that then we may as well blame 'pit bulls' for having a bad reputation because of the common use of them in dog fights. You are blaming cats when it isn't their fault, it is their owners fault. In my city there is a by-law that demands that cats are to be kept indoors. If cats are caught while outside then they go to the pound and have to be paid for to be removed. It isn't always strictly followed or enforced but is is there. I have seen less cats outside since it came into place too.

I hate cats , my grandmother has a cat and that is about the only one I even come close to liking. I know all the cat owners probably think i'm a terrible person but honestly when i'm out driving and a cat runs into the road I won't even slow down. I don't speed up or anything but i'm not going to do anything dangerous that would endanger me or other drivers. Ive never hit a cat but its come close a few times , if I did hit a cat id probably feel terrible because little timmy will never see mr.fluffyface again , that and id be the one cleaning guts off of my tires. But seriously people need to make it illegal to let cats outside of their yard , they have cat leashes.
