hey behen, the customs in australia are very strict, barring even foodstuff and such so i have no idea how anyone can bring in live animals if they have been banned. you can try enquiring at your local petstores and see what they can tell you about getting hamsters. i tried to do a quick search on the net but i couldn't find any information.

I can't imagine having any animal banned. As far as I know, I can get all the animals I've heard of. That must suck, though. :undecided:

This is way off the topic, but in California(US) (and the state next to me  ) dont allow the new breed of fish. Glofish. i read about it :D . Every state but California :worried: . no animal should be banned  .

Like I said in my reply above:

EVIL!!!!!!!!!sorry Nelson :shy:

fuzz

P.S. Maybe the will lift the bann :cheeky:

I can understand why australia and new zealand banned hamsters, its for the sake of their ecology. And their ecology is one of their biggest resouces for creating income and revenues (crops, farms and tourism). So its risky to tip the balance of their ecology. I think the local government is doing what is best for the country. Its a shame that the locals cannot keep hamsters but that cannot be helped.

Although it is unfortunate for the responsible pet owner, it makes sense to ban animals that could harm the ecology if they got loose or were released. The reason mice and rats aren't banned is because every ship that lands in Australia has wild rats or mice aboard, it would be impossible to keep all of them out. So there is no reason to ban because they are already there. Infact the only place in the world were rats are banned is Alberta canada, a land locked area that has a mountain range keeping them from getting there on there own.

I would suggest that small animal enthusiasts in Australia research the animals that are available and find one most suited to there desires. In Australia they don't have the same animal diseases as the rest of the world because they don't allow new animals to be imported, in North America small animal enthusiasts would have to be cautious of Sendai (only rats and mice) and SDA (rats mice hamsters rabbits and others). In australia those diseases don't exist because no animals are allowed in so no animals carrying diseases can get in.

So unfortunetly no Hamsters :'( but there are other choices, i ofcourse would recomend rats! Although Australia doesn't have the same variety as in north america (no dumbo eared and no hairless) because these varieties are new and new animals can't be imported.

Good Luck finding an animal you like that it is legal to own

and PLEASE don't encorage anyone to import or illegally own an animal that could destroy a very sensitive ecology, Australia is truly one of a kind and is already in danger because of feral animals. Lets try to preserve as much of it as possible.
