The weirdest thing is that even though hamsters are banned in Australia, pet mice and fancy rats are allowed. At first I thought that it was becoz of wood shavings. Most hamsters owners use wood shavings. There is a law in Australia stating that you can only bring a limited amount of wood products into Australia. Am I right?

sometimes too many of a kind of animals can destroy the local breeds, i remember reading a certain breed of animals that destroy ppl crops, the animals are imported into their nation, when the owner business failed, he released all his animals into the wild, these animals breeds and destroy the natural habitat of the nation.(i forget what animals, but i thnk the nation should be new zealand)but i heard that the animals meat is a rare food eaten by japenese

the reason why animals are banned are becoz too many of the same kind can destroy their local breeds, this is esp so for irresponsible owners whom abandoned their pets.

in us, cats are so overpopulated that they killed birds and small animals. again human faults...singapore also faced cat problem but the problem is still a problem. luckily our hamsters friends is still under control as i dun see wild hamsters running around, cant imagine that too.

I wanted to go to live in Australia because of the coral reef, but now that i know this I changed my mind. A country that doesn't like hamsters doesn't need me >:(

umm... there was a saying... "Rules are made to be violated" or something like that... :innocent:

Do you have Hamster Police in NZ? Ok just kidding... :innocent:

Eh, then how come sheeps are allowed... they're endangering the *erm* grass population...

Well anyways I feel sorry for ya too... actually if hamsters would be illegal in the country where I'm from, I would still keep them and only way they could take my hammies away from me would be over my dead body!!!

You could just not obey the rule, but then you would have to actually find a hamster. And risk the chance of being caught...the only thing I can say is get the next closest thing to a hamster (gerbil, mouse, rat), even thought they are all very different and it wouldn't be the same.

I can't imagine having any animal banned. As far as I know, I can get all the animals I've heard of. That must suck, though. :undecided:

Perhaps in such places, mice/rats are not even considered as "pets", maybe "pests" instead! LOL ;D :D  :mischievous: .....no offence! :x :P

Oh yeah, they are pests. My neighbor gets wild mice in her house and they chew EVERYTHING. There is definitely a difference between wild and domestic though, so unless people would let their pets loose outside, I don't see why there would be a problem.

yeah-----
If mice and such are allowed? why arent hammies? the hammies cause no trouble, they most likely will die than cause harm---I just dont get it :(
And here they sell crittertrail and Habitrail, these cages are wayy to big for a mice and most likely they can squeeze through

Weird laws, I guess. Most of the states have a few strange laws, I know California does.

And I don't think those cages would be too big. But then...I don't really remember how big a mouse is. Not that much smaller than a syrian hamster, are they?
