everyone I've ever talked to at Petco has known nothing.

Though, the one time I ventured halfway across the world to go to a Petsmart, there was a guy there who seemed to know a lot about them.  I vote Petsmart.

Most petshops (IMO) know nothing about the animals they sell. Think about it how many shops can know everything to care for Bengal cats, puppies, freshwarter fish, saltwater fish, birds, lizards and reptiles AND varied rodents? Not very many.. in fact, none that I have seen. Each shop has told me at least ONE wrong thing about care for either my fish, degus or my hamster I'm getting.

Well, ONE person could know about ONE type of animal.  They could have a small animals guy, who works in the small animals department and knows about small animals.  They could have a fish guy who works with the fish and knows about fish, and a bengal cat guy....

That's about how many people work there anyway.  They'd just be replacing dumb guys with smart guys.  The guys I saw a Petco yesterday knew nothing.  ALL of them knew NOTHING.  This is not something I would defend.  Somebody should know something.

Our Petsmart is pretty bad... about 6-8 Syrians in a 10 gallon tank, 1 lone mouse in a 10 gallon, all together there is about 50 syrians, 1-2 dwarfs, a few guinea  pigs, 5-6 rats and 1 mouse. They use aspen, use mesh wheels, and its always dirty. They petco is better but this person had two females and was buying a male so they would breed. I was SOOO mad they actually sold it to them! They keep them on carefresh. Small cages still.

Yes, there could be one person per department, but the shops I was referring to employ 2-3 workers TOPS per shop. (And yes, I know this for a fact, since one of them I go to once a week) The other one I've been to fairly often and once again it's the same 2-3 people there and each shop has given me bad advice for fish and use PINE for hamsters.. and appear to think that's just dandy and safe.

And yes, someone should know something.. good luck getting the animal they are aware of on their shift.. its crazy.

Edited to add the shop I got Kipper at said its fine to have 2 syrians together. Just not 2 males.. think they said 2 females are ok and male and female = lots of babies. Chew on that. (I only asked curious of what they would say, by the way)

Ooooh.
My Petco was, last time I went for supplies, really awesome.  They keep syrians in different cages, a pair of dwarves in one cage, and another pair in another cage.  In fact, I got my dwarves from Petco, and Hazel lived through her average lifespan, and Lilian is still going.  The lady who sold me the dwarves seemed to know alot about hamsters, too.  I can't remember what bedding they were using, but, the cages were pretty clean.

I vote Petco!

I'm sorry that you had that experience. Although I work in a Petco as the small animal specalist and work very hard to make sure that they are all properly taken care of. All of our cages have certain things that are supposed to be in them. We've changed from wheels with metal bars to mesh. We also have a limit on how many can inhabit them. Mine are also cleaned out twice a week fully everying sanatized and dishes and water bottles are changed daily.

I work very hard because I love my fury pets :)

i know many petco/petsmarts are bad. but the one that is 5 mins away from me really cares about their animals. they usually dont have mesh wheels they have the comfort wheels/silent spinners and if any of the hammies start fighting they take care to separate them and they have plenty of extra cages on hand. i dont think the people that work in my petco care about money as much as the animals, and trust me, i know the employees very well as ive been going to that petco for years. they sometimes lazy off on changing the bedding but they get to it soon afterward. and they check on the animals a lot during the day and spend time with them and they are very informative

To everyone that said there store keeps only males, I have heard from many different people of getting a "male" form and them thier "male" has babies so either they do get females from the mill who do not take proper care of thier animals and sell then to the store aren't sexing them right, or Petsmart has found a way to pregnate, have a male carry to term and have babies.
Which is more likely?

PETA is stupid they r such lyers

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, what a bunch of losers they are working torward having hamsters and other animals treated right and not have to suffer being breed at mills and sent to a store who may or may not treat then right.
Perhaps your store tells you the truth, OH wait they claim to only adopt out animals and will put stickers claiming this on guinea pig, rat, and hamster cages, but in the VERY fine print of Petsmarts disclaimer only dogs and cats are considered animals, and while every once in awhile they may adopt out a guinea pig or hamster 99 percent of the time they are a return and they can not legally re-sell them.
TO everyone that said "MY pet store is great have you ever seen they backroom or mills the animals come from.
