i dont think it will matter much (to the zoo) if the snake winds up eating the hamster, thats what they intended in the first place so i dont think it would bother them too much if it winds up happening.

seriously both snakes, and hamsters are solitary animals, except for maybe the house snake, so I don't see why they need to stress out the hamster as well as the snake :-/ just seems to cruel to me.

What if the hamster makes the snake mad, then the snake will turn on the HAMSTER! Then again, how would the hamster make the snake mad... :undecided:

that is kinda cute but at the same time its mean expeccially to the hamster! if the snake dont like being withthe hamster the snake could just eat it :( but if the hamster dont like being with the snake what can he do?? they probly just seem like there happy together because they dont have a choice. ye its cute but i think they should take the hamster out but if they was gonna feed the hamster to the snake anyway they probly dont care if there happy together or not :(

its a winter white dwarf hamster, they arent solitary.  syrians are solitary but dont mind interaction with some other animals, people for just one example  :p

edit: sorry for double post

This is not funny or cute at all.  This is cruelty, especially to that poor little hamster.  It is so sad that in the 1st place, he was meant to be a feeder.  And worse, the zoo seems to think its funny that a feeder hamster becoming a "friend" of a snake.

Those feeder hamsters are capable of feeling emotions just like those sweet little hammies we have at home.  The only difference is that they are unlucky to become feeder hamsters.  So what's so funny about this article?

The only good thing is that the hamster manages to survive because the snake does not eat him.  But it will be so horrible that if one day, he is betrayed by the "friend" (the snake) to become the "friend"'s snack.

BTW, dwarf hamsters may not be solitary, but hamsters, in general do not mix with other species either.  Living with its predator, by rights, should be very stressful for the hamster.  Though I do hope this case is an exception since at least, that poor very hamster do have a relatively ok life before its death.

When it was in my newspaper my parents told me to read it and i was all like HUH?

Maybe the snake just needed some company. It happened a while ago. I wonder what happened now!

And it is NOT cruelty! It was it's lunch! Snakes always get fed mice and hamsters! You should be happy for the hamster it seems to like it when i read in the newspaper! They even slept together! It is NOT cruelty!

janice, if the hamster was stressed out it would not purposely crawl on top of the snake and sleep there.  and it would show SIGNS of stress.  and your right its not funny, its awesome!  if its so cruel to mix a dwarf hamster with other species than you are cruel by owning a hamster.  YOU are another species!
