I went to PetsMart about an hour ago and they are no longer selling Small Rodents because of Samonella... That's terrible... But they said they might eventually bring back small rodents... It's so sad I love seeing the hamsters and all I did was look into empty tanks. So my question is... Is your PetsMart still selling hamsters? All I know is mine isn't...

Oh I heard about this...shoot, I was at Petsmart today, my mom said we were gonna look at the animals but we got so caught up into talking to a dog owner there that we never looked.

My Petsmart never has very many animals anyway, usually just a hamster or 2, a couple rats, and a guinea pig. :p I heard though that they are going to change their supplier or something, but until then, no small animals. Which is fine with me because I hate Petsmart.

I wish I was near your Petsmart Sandy. That is really mean. Maybe if they can hire some employees that clean the cage once a week and don't decide to think about cleaning it until they see fungus growing, they won't have to worry about salmonella!

My parents said that they probally don't have any rodents temporarily because they don't want to get sued if one of the rodents had samonella. They never mentioned that it was samonella but in a description on the cages it kept saying to wash your hands after you play with them and like other things to do with samonella. But ya it said that the cages were reserved for a new supplier.

I rather get hams from Petco then Petsmart. Our Petsmart has old and sickly hamsters. They just got rid of all of there small animals. Because there were these Honey hamsters that never were bought and the rodents there weren't being sold... so... Ya when I'm 16 I should go work in the hamster department.

The PetSmart were I live hasn't sold them for eight months now. The only place you can get hams here is from breeders or small petshops.

Scabbers also told me that our local pet shop stopped selling rodents also. This is really terrible. Why don't they stop selling reptiles? They carry salmonella too

They probably won't stop selling reptiles because they're less likely to pass diseases on *I think. Also, I think the salmonella was found in small animals so only THEY are being checked.
I haven't see anything online or on the the news. Does anyone have a link to a website?

All animals carry salmonella... so technically the pet stores shouldn't alow dogs or cats inside their doors!

I don't think they honestly care or they would have actually known about the thing I just said. Its probably more of a "Hey, Department of Agriculture, look at us, we care!" kind of thing. If the Dept. of Ag. comes down on them then the store will have to close (most likely temporarily). How would it look to their image if a Petsmart closed due to Salmonella?

I dunno, the Dept. of Agriculture branch where I live is really picky... if we're sweeping at the shelter and there's too much stuff in the swept pile we could be written up for uncleanliness...

About a month ago I went to petsmart to get a new hamster and ALL the tanks were empty except 3 (one with 4 gerbils, one with 2 chinnies and one with JUSt Skiitles wich is my hamster now) he looked fine and everything so I got him but I haven't heard anything on the news about it..but I haven't went to a pet store since then O.o I don't know if there still selling them here in Ontario..i'll halfto check that out..good thing I found this forumn or I would have had no clue about the salmonella problem.

Oh...isn't all this related to the stuff that happened a month or two ago? I haven't heard of anything new, so I'm just assuming that it just has to do with the salmonella and LCMV virus that got so much hype.

I don't think they're doing it just because they CAN have salmonella, but because the infected animals were from Petsmart. WOuld be interesting to know if the Petcos are doing this too?

Oh well...not like I had any plans to get another pet lol.
