Hey guys, back again.

I usually hate posting 2 times in a row, but whatever :)

So I was looking at "hamster news" on google and the results were just really mixed.

Here are some results that I wanted you guys to look at, they are kinda wierd.

*tw: mentions of hamsters being aggresive*

I got a billion articles about some scientists who were experimenting on hamsters with CRISPR (a gene editing technology) and accidentally made them extra aggresive:

https://boingboing.net/2022/05/29/scientists-accidentally-made-a-vicious-mutant-attack-hamster.html

https://nypost.com/2022/05/29/northwestern-university-gene-editing-experiment-turns-hamsters-violent/

https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/scientists-surprised-after-gene-editing-experiment-turn-docile-hamsters-hyper-aggressive-study-3019122

https://futurism.com/the-byte/gene-hacked-hamsters-aggressive

This article is about Poppy Bee Hamstery (Tae is from there) and they are breeding super sized satin-coated hamsters:

https://northernvirginiamag.com/family/pets/2022/05/25/poppy-bee-hamstery/

Monkeypox article: https://www.natureworldnews.com/articles/51058/20220529/hamsters-owned-by-monkeypox-carriers-should-be-isolated-or-killed.htm

I have no clue if these are real or fake, so can you guys give me answers?

Istg, hamster news is CRAZY!!

thanks

- kat

If you don't know this reference, for the love of cheese, go watch Jurassic Park (the real one) from the 90s.

It does seem kinda far-fetched....

I'm not sure thought, they could probably do that if they wanted to...

CRISPR is a very dangerous, relatively new technology. They absolutely can, there is tons of gene splicing currently being done on animals and have been done for 15-20 years. Making animal hybrids, growing human body parts inside of animals, etc, this is small potatoes in comparison to what they are currently doing. Morality and ethics are kind of being thrown out the window for progress, for wealth, for prestige, etc.

I mean, it makes me wonder about how dumb these "smart" scientists are, have you ever watched a science fiction movie where screwing with nature ended well??

We learned about CRISPR in science, and it seemed very new.

That's horrible!! Why would they do that to innocent creatures? :crybuckets:

Exactly. Have none of these "scientists" seen Jurassic World?!

Well, it started in the 80s but in terms of being able to understand consequences of editing DNA/RNA, etc, "new". They have been using the technique for a while but only recently (in the last couple of decades) began creating medication, messing with viral strains, being able to create viable hybrids, etc.

I think new stuff presents a lot of opportunities, not always good though, imo.

Do you think creating hybrids/cloning is ethical?

Do you think creating hybrids/cloning is ethical?

I think it depends on:

Whose doing it? Is it someone that can be trusted without ulterior motives?

Why are they doing it? Is it to solve just to solve problem or just to gain prestige by being the first ones that could do it, or someone who thinks about the ramifications of what they are doing? The road to heII is paved with good intentions and I'm not just talking about a literal heII but major consequences that humanity could suffer because of someone's carelessness.

Are they doing it ethically? Are they treating the animals with respect and care? Do they use them and throw them away after?

We don't have a legal framework right now for animal human hybrids, are they animal? Are they human? Do they have rights? These are big deep ethical questions that aren't answered yet and do we wait until they exist to answer the questions? Same with Robots with AI, we have not even begun to answer these questions, yet we are creating them, using them for our own purposes, etc.

Right now, I don't believe it is ethical because we haven't had those discussions and frankly, I prefer to leave the job of playing God to God. Not a scientist with a God complex. Exploitation because you created it, doesn't make it less exploitative.

People do experiments with animals all the time. God gave animals to us, so we care for them, but they are not as valuable as humans, so if scientists are using hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas, any animals for experiments, it is not that bad, unless it is serious animal abuse. That does not mean we should treat animals like dirt, but if we need to do an experiment on them that could save humans, (or the animal), animal testing is fine if we know what we are doing.

Because we already know that hamsters will most often fight if they are housed together, putting them together is a dangerous and mean experiment, it is an unnecessary experiment, because we already know what would happen. But the group called Hero Rats, which uses rats to find land mines, is ok because it is not abusive, is save for the animal and benefits humans.

And then there is testing chemicals on them. We should not be trying to feed Radon water to animals, because we know that Radon is poisonous. (Ironically, in the old days they thought Radon water was the ultimate health drink.)

But, in my opinion, hybrid animals are pretty cool. But it is messing up that natural order of nature and God's work, and when we try to make new animals, it is kind of wrong, if you know what I mean.
