Jasmine passed away in January of 2021 from what I believe was A heart attack, she was very smart and sweet but always so scared, thumping her foot for danger several times a day.
Mahogany was brave and adventurous, A little less inclined to be handled then her sister but always trying to find ways to escape her very roomy tank.
In the last four to six months of her life mahogany gained weight (which can be expected for aging gerbils) and got a little less energy, I couldn't have her exercise because when she was a young gerbil she never learned to run on a wheel, she always just stuffed it with bedding. I tried several sizes, materials, from plastic to wood. But she never learned, regardless she still had a lovely life.
I wasn't expecting her to live as long as she did (them being my first gerbils) so I did not get her another friend through spit cage method, now I kinda wish I had but she still had a happy life, brought me great joy, and my parents too! Who always looked forward to seeing her lil head pop out of her coconut
In a couple months I think I will get another dwarf hamster but I don't think I will have gerbils again until after college, as there longer life spans are a worry where I don't want to head to college leaving my parents to care for a pet.
We had a very nice funeral in our back yard as we have done for jasmine and bear (my dwarf hamster) buying little chests to bury them in and hand pained grave stones personalized for each.
