Hello!

I'm planning to get three female mice and feed them this food. How often and how much per day should I feed them? I have looked everywhere and can't find an answer. More specific question, what percentage of their body weight do they eat food.

Also, unrelated, can I only use one water bowl for these mice? I'll refill it and clean it everyday.

Thanks!

HI! I would personally recommend at least two water bowls/bottles to prevent resource guarding. Same with wheels. Mice don't drink a ton, so you can use pretty small bowls or bottles, but if necessary one will work temporarily.

For mice you should feed about a tsp or 2 grams of food per mouse, so for three females you will want to feed 3 tsp or 1 tbsp of food, everyday.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for replying! I'll use two bowls when I get them. (haven't had good luck with bottles in the past lol) Are saucers ok for mice as well or just wheels?

Hi,

I also don't prefer bottles with my mice. Although saucers are safe, they aren't the best option for smaller mice, if you have bigger mice they might do better, but often saucers will fling young mice or small mice off the wheel when they stop running. Providing a saucer can be good fun for a mouse, but if you choose to have a saucer in the cage, you will want to include one (or more) normal wheels.

Hope this helps!

Yes, I was planning on buying one wheel and one saucer. Also, are mice burrowing animals? Do they need lots of bedding like hamsters?

Hi,

Mice are both burrowing and climbing animals, I would recommend at least 6 inches of substrate or more through out the cage and lots of things to climb.

It's an old misconception that mice don't burrow, our domestic mice are derived form the Western House Mouse and the Japanese House Mouse, both a burrowing species. The idea that mice only climb comes from the Deer Mouse, a arboreal species of mouse that does not burrow.

Hope this helps!

What is the cheapest food I can feed mice? Can I use matzuri rat and mouse blocks along with Higgins sunburst mouse and rat food like a hamster?

No. It’ll be too high in protein for the majority of mice. Higgins + Mazuri is around 18% protein and you usually don’t want to go with anything over about 14-15%. Too much protein can cause itchy spots called hotspots. Some mice from breeders can tolerate higher protein levels but you’d have to talk with the individual breeder about their line of mice. Higgins on its own would be better than Higgins mixed with Mazuri because of the protein. I would opt for the mouse version though.

The Higgins Rat and Mouse food GA is 14 protein, 7 fat and 6 fiber. Is that ok?
