Do you mean just, like, walking through pet stores? On Craigslist? Or on HH? At pet stores and on Craigslist I mainly see males, but it’s hard to tell cause most times you don’t see their stomach in photos or at stores
Well I meant in general because almost every time I see a hamster in front of my face their female. I guess it’s just a coincidence.

Cool! In my experience usually it’s hard to tell as you don’t always see their belly/rear end, and balls aren’t always super obvious, but when they are I think I mostly see male hamsters

My best guess for why is that the breeders supplying pet shops keep back more females to breed from.
I haven't had enough dwarfs guests to get reliable data but so far they seem to skew male as well.

It's mostly female here. Our local Petsmart is a female store (they only get in female hamsters; the males go elsewhere - this prevents accidental in-store breeding), so this means that local adoptable hams are often also female. I'd have to go a little ways or to the Petco to see males (Petco doesn't seem to have the gendered store system).

Where I am kijiji (like Craigslist) is I’d say half and half- maybe more males.
Pet stores around here are mostly males, however the pet shop that most hamsters here are bought at sells only female hamsters.
I’ve only known of a few people that own hamsters and they’ve all had male hams except for one person that had a male and then a female. The rescues around here usually have female hamsters though.
And on another online platform based around animals it’s mostly female hams.

I see mostly males, but then again, you can't trust petstore labels, I suppose. But I would say male ![]()

That is the truest thing I've ever heard. Pet store labels are sooo misleading! My hamster (who used to be my class pet which my teacher got) came from a pet store. She was labeled "male Winter White". She is not a male and likely not a winter white.
