I found my mouse pika dead today. As if that wasn’t bad enough, her sister togepi was eating her body. At first I thought she was eating a piece of food, but I looked closer and it was something red and slimy. I looked at it for a good 30 seconds, before I realized. I screamed bloody murder and ran downstairs to my mom. I refused to look at her anymore so my mom took her out for me. An entire side of her body had been eaten. I haven’t looked at the cage since it happened. I’m considering giving Togepi back to the rescue I got her from. She’s a lone mouse now and doesn’t get along with my other mice. Plus I’m slightly traumatized from this whole experience.

Pika is the brown one in these. She was really shy and hard to take pictures of.

Also I’d like to add, I don’t think togepi killed pika. Pika was pretty old and probably died of old age, and togepi was trying to dispose of her body.

I'm very sorry about your loss. I think you should probably wait a few days and then see how you feel. The loss is very fresh. HUGS

I know the sight of a decomposing and open wound too well in such small animals. It is completely understandable that you're traumatized but I'd wait a few days before making a decision because we cant forget that these animals still have wild instincts and it's not a reflection on the personality of the animal. You could always get another rat when you feel comfortable again. I hope you're doing okay, may your sweet rat rest in peace ❤

Update: I’ve decided to keep Togepi. She’s pretty old and I don’t want to stress her out anymore by moving her back to the rescue. I still love her, and I just have to work through the whole “she ate her sister” thing, and see her as her normal sweet self. Thanks for all your kind words. ❤️

I am a bit late but I am so sorry for your loss. She lived a great life and you did everything you could! I am glad you decided to keep her but not gonna lie I wouldn't know what to do in that situation.
