Hi guys!!

So as you may or may not know, I have a 7 year old dog named Chesley. Last spring she got diagnosed with diabetes and was prescribed with insulin. She gets 9 units of insulin per dosage (18 units in all). We use the Lantus insulin.

She also recently developed cataracts and has unfortunately gone blind. She used to fall of curbs and bang into walls a lot but she’s gotten a little better with direction.

Chesley is a puggle (pug+beagle) and she really likes digging int he trash (obviously not the best). I used to do puzzle toys and other activities with her (like jumping and trick training), but with her diabetes it’s a lot harder for her to do puzzle toys and she can’t do trick training with her cataracts. She also can’t go on new walks because she’ll ram into trees :( Anyone have any ideas on how to give her more enrichment?

Thanks so much!!

Have you considered feeding enrichment like lick mats? Especially a frozen lick mat, those would help keep her occupied while eating for a while!

I agree with Ajunice- Snuffle mats/Foraging mags, or lick mats, are a great way to give enrichment for dogs :)

Thanks!!

My only concern with these would be giving her her unsulin in a timely manner before she walks away.

If you want to train your dog, then you should definitely consider using an enrichment item. If your dog has trouble locating things like food, water, or toys, then training could be difficult. You can try using an object that he/she would normally associate with food, water, or playtime. Once your dog learns to associate the object with something positive, then you can move on to other things.
