I am so so so sorry, recently pip passed away she was 1 year old a while ago and i feel so awful, none of my hamsters have survived more than 6 months in my care and im really starting to feel like a bad hamster owner, I deep cleaned Pips cage yesterday and i guess she had too much stress and not enough bedding,
I dont think im fit to own anymore hamsters, rest in peace lil pipster

You mentioned she was 1 years old a while ago, what species was she? Did you notice any kind of wobbling, less drinking etc. symptoms?
What made you think it was the stress of cleaning her enclosure?
Rest in peace Pip, play well at the rainbow bridge. <3

You said Pip was over a year old? Sometimes hamsters just have bad genetics and die from unexplained causes.
Is there anything that would make you believe it was something to do with your care? I only had Cordelia for about 7 months. She was older too.
Also dwarves seem to live shorter lives, from what I can tell. I think because of the hybrid genetics.
You cared, you are obviously here learning about hamster care, that already makes you a better owner than 90% of hamster owners out there.
Take a break if you need it but just know, that however short a life, you gave them a good one

omg, i have the same problem as you. None of my hamsters have lived for more than 6 months in my care too. This is probably due to bad genetics...
don't feel guilty, just because other people have hamster that live long lives that doesn't mean they had a good life. I'm sure your hamsters had better lives than some other hamsters that lived long lives. My pm's are open if you want to talk.
Rest in Peace Pip

Thank you
and yeah, as far as I can tell she was actually orignaly from a pet store and a blue pied hybrid at that so that may have been part of the cause as well ![]()

Thank you so much for saying that ! and yeah she seemed a bit stressed after i did a deep clean and I found her half buried in the bedding unlike fully covered as normal, being me i really did just jump to conclusions and guess it was my fault for not giving her enough :l

yeah she turned 1 in january and a she was a blue pied robo, I didnt notice anything strange other than she was just more active at night (which was really just her changing her sleep schedule) I havent done an entire deep clean since i got her, usally a small spot clean of soiled bedding and a wipe down of her levels and she seemed fine, she was also moved for a bit and the strange noises of a new location may have made her scared, we found some mold in the room next to her (still quite close so she was moved downstairs and seemed more on edge while they sprayed down the room)

If you want to do more you could upgrade the cage and give more bedding but if you cant or are not allowed I've been there and you should know it's okay.
I'm sure you're a wonderful hamster owner because you took the time to give her a love filled life and a clean home. That's more than you can say for alot of pet owners.
Please dont give up on hammies, all of them are different and wonderful in their own way. My PMS are always open. May pip rest in peace the sweet baby...
