Hi, I've been planning to get a group of female mice, I'm thinking about four mice, and then introducing two more at a later time. The going plan was to build a front opening cage, I don't want anything top opening as I want to be able to hang toys without disturbing them when I need to get into the cage. I ran across the Large Niteangel Vista, and really like the acrylic and visibility into the cage. Since I'm getting female mice, I want to be able to view them easily, as they most likely will not be very eager to be handled. The cage is 1,069 sq inches, but my three main concerns are;

  • The ventilation, is it ventilated enough? Is there enough airflow through the top of the cage?
  •  Are the lines in the top of the cage to large? Can a mouse climb through? This isn't a deal breaker personally, I can glue 1/4 inch mesh onto it.
  • Is it large enough for a group of 6 mice?

I'd obviously be doing regular cleanings of the cage, etc. But this cage seems much easier for viewing of the animals and I really like the semi-front opening door.

+ If anyone has any tips of keeping groups of females, that would be great, I'm always open to learn, and my experience is heavily with males.

It is large enough for a group of mice, and I don't think the gaps in the top would be a problem, but I would be concerned about the cage absorbing urine/odor because the ends aren't sealed. I think it could become really stinky. I have no experience with this cage though, but I do have a group (initially 5, now 3) of female mice right now.

I think it would be good for mice. I would add the mesh just in case, mice are REALLY hard to find when they escape. (Believe me, my mice have escaped once). I would add some mesh at the sides because mice are very prone to replspqtory infections, so just be careful. The mesh at the top can be used to hang toys. My mice love hanging toys so I would recommend a lot of them.. I do not know what the material of the cage is, however my mice are big chewers and the cage seems to be thin. So beware of any places where mice can chew. The size looks good for up to a group of 8 I would say, but start to be careful when you have larger groups that they do not start fighting. My mice started fighting recently though I only have 6, so make sure you have a spare cage or two to separate just in case. Like meh said I don't know if the cage is sealed, but if it is not, it would ruin quickly. I would recommend sealing it with something like modge podge, or something non-toxic. Mice pee a lot and it is very, very smelly so I would seal it so it would just wipe up.. Mice are very much watch pets from my experience so the big front would be awesome. Hope this helps!

I believe the niteangel cages are coated in something to make them water proof so I don't think pee soaking in will be an issue :)

Thank you everyone for the replies! I have a ton of spare cages, and will modge podge it incase. The wood looks like a type of pressboard, so I'm worried about putting large amounts of mesh on. The top I can glue mesh onto, but I don't believe staples would stay in pressboard, so I don't think I can mesh the sides very well, I don't want the mice being able to easily reach the glue used. Is there anything else I could do for ventilation?
