Around 6:30 pm EST I noticed my elder male mouse acting very lethargic and just.. not quite right. Now he has 2 years and 6 months old, so I'm pretty confident in saying that he's dying of old age. I've owned countless small animals to know the signs, and I'd been expecting this ever since his brother died 6 months ago-- note: they were not housed together.

It's been almost 12 hours since this has started and Linkin is still alive, not looking too well, but alive nonetheless, which I don't think I've ever seen before. Usually when I notice signs that my pet is on their last legs of life, it goes pretty quick. I've been checking in on him often, removed most of the toys from his cage so he doesn't get caught under something, and have even gave him a few, gentle pats every now and then to see if I get a response. He did squeak/huff the last I did this, just a few minutes ago. He moved around a little in the beginning, but has stayed in the same spot for about 9-10 hours now. His breathing looks to be rapid and shallow.

He's currently half-buried himself in the bedding, but from what I did see of him before he did thing, he had this whitish gunk around his left eye. Unsure if it's on the right eye as well. I've never seen that on any of my pets before either.

While I'm confident in saying that there isn't much I can do for Linkin aside from keep an eye on him, has anyone else noticed this kind of behavior before? Is it normal for some mice to hold out for a while longer, or is there something else going on here? I'm also very curious about the substance I saw around his eye, I can try getting a closer look if someone recommends-- otherwise I'd rather leave Linkin to whatever peace he has left.

Hi!

If your mouse looks to be in pain, I would try to get to a vet that can put him down. Mice that die from old age usually go pretty quick. This to me seems like some kind of organ failure or something. I would get him to a vet so he can be put down.

He doesn't appear to be in pain, but I know mice tend to hide these signs. Is there anything major I should look out for? Or is there a few symptoms of organ failure that I can look out for?

Nonetheless, I'll definitely start making some calls with nearby veterinarians soon. Even if he's not in pain, I don't want my little man to suffer, he deserves to go peacefully.

EDIT: I called up the place just down the road and explained what was going on, I don't know if it's just me but they wanted $269 for a mouse euthanasia, which sounds way too expensive. I'm sad to say I just don't have that kind of money right now, so I'll be keeping a good eye on him until he passes away naturally. Thank you for your help Forgetfulbreeze!

That's an insane price. The vet my work uses charged us $40 to euthanize a mouse, and no we do not get any sort of discount with them.

We live in a very "rich people oriented" town, so I'm not surprised the price was that jacked up. In the future I'll call a few vet clinics farther out and ask about euthanasia prices so I at least have a few options should I need to put down a suffering pet.

Good news though, Linkin passed away peacefully about half an hour ago. Didn't seem in pain at all when I moved him onto a more comfortable pile of bedding. The old man put off his death for just shy of 24 hours, he was such a trooper <3

I get that with the pricing. I moved from the PNW, and vets there are super expensive because there's so few vet schools in that part of the country. Since moving, my average vet bill is 1/2 to 1/4 the price I'm used to.

Glad to hear it was peaceful :). Feeling like your pet suffered is one of the worst things.
