I am so happy and proud of those girls.

On another note, touching on what one of them said, the fact that hamsters that tested negative were still sent for euthanasia is absolutely horrible. What's going to happen next? Any pets look like they might have covid are going to be murdered? Ugh.

thats like me getting treatment for covid because i just had a cold and tested negative

Since they are doing like a mass cull (which yes, is sad but I guess if they have to control it?)
Are they at least euthanizing them humanely?
I’ve heard that there are also being dogs and stuff culled there because of covid.

Old topic, but a lot to say. I’ll keep it short…

To me, covid is such a low-risk thing— really, this thing has a 99% survival rate— and I think the whole world has lost its mind. I absolutely hate how anthropocentric we humans are, valuing our life over those of these poor little animals. I don’t believe in animal testing, and I don’t believe that these hamsters deserved to die because of what is effectively a bad flu.

No, I don’t deny covid exists, yes it has killed people, but haven’t we seen two years into this whole mess that trying to control it is futile? The virus is going to virus… we can use our common sense, stay home if we are sick, but this hysteria about covid is not only destroying our own human lives, but now we are killing animals because of it. Sometimes I am ashamed to be human.

I find it ironic how you seem so appalled by the deaths of these hamsters but pretty much gloss over the deaths of millions of people. I almost lost my father to covid. He had severe complications and still struggles with effects months later. I would save his life over a dozen hamsters any day.

Animal testing is a separate issue entirely. While I completely disagree with animal testing when it comes to cosmetics, I acknowledge that it is important when it comes to pharmaceuticals. In an ideal world, we wouldn’t test on animals at all, but that’s simply not an option right now. Hopefully, when technology advances further, animal testing won’t be necessary anymore.

The humans were going to die regardless, if you had a weak immune system.

Killing innocent animals that weren't sick or even tested for covid, asking people to turn in their pet hamsters who aren't ill, all so you can pretend you are protecting humans, is just plain NONSENSE. The Chinese government wants the illusion of control and success, they don't actually care about what saves lives.

All of my family has had covid and yes it's su cks. My MIL was on a ventilator but pulled through. She also had many health issues. In the end, once it got out into the world. Nothing anyone did could have stopped it and killing innocent lives in the process doesn't make it better.

I find it ironic, that you call yourself vegan and gloss over the death of innocent animals, who aren't even dying for a purpose like to give life to other creatures. Whose bodies couldn't be buried but instead thrown into a fire.

Well, I guess it's that I don't really feel like it's comparable. I'm sorry you almost lost your father to covid, and I'm glad he recovered... it also doesn't have much to do with killing innocent animals in Hong Kong.

Obviously, the thing with covid is that it's dangerous for people who are at-risk for it. Doesn't mean the at-risk people deserve to die etc, but I hate how critiquing any of the measures used to try and combat this virus suddenly means you don't care that millions of people have died. I just don't agree with these draconian measures to contain a virus that is out in the world, will infect people, and is going to run its course whether we, as a human society, admit that or not. We should be focused on treatment, rather than focusing all energy onto prevention efforts (including killing innocent animals that have nothing to do with this) that -- two years later -- have shown repeatedly to not be feasible. I feel like I'm coming from a place of empathy here...especially since I'm thinking about the suicides and drug overdoses caused by lockdowns and mandates, which often seem to get glossed over.

This is also a hamster forum... and I want to talk about hamsters! I just get so sad thinking about the hamsters, because since humans have decided to domesticate them they're suddenly killed for *maybe having covid*, or sprayed in the eyes with perfume, etc etc. How is that not evil? I'm reminded of the wisdom of Calvin and Hobbes... Calvin asks Hobbes, "Do you believe in the devil? A supreme being dedicated to the corruption and temptation of man?" Hobbes replies, "I'm not sure man needs the help."
