Hello! Do you think natural forage should be a necessity for hamsters? I don't think they should be, as hamsters can thrive without them, though I still think they should be strongly encouraged.

IMO, yes.

It should be a necessity.

For health/nutrition/boredom issues.

As kikya mentioned - it is close to foraging and just a great thing/experience for hammies.

That's tough, but on the whole, I say not 100% necessary but as an enrichment tool, it can't be beat. It's the closest thing to natural forging that our hamsters can get.

Personally I think every hamster owner should give their hamster forage at some point, unless it is unavailable to them in their country then there's really nothing you can do. Hamsters really enjoy foraging for them not to mention they make the cage look amazing!

I tried adding millet sprays to my cage, and one third of it is gone the next morning. (the spray is very long, around 9 inches). So I removed it because she refuses to eat proteins sources like dried shrimp and chicken breast. Shes a young robo so she needs a lot of protein.

So no, I wouldn't consider sprays necessary. However, older hamsters and hamsters that show less interest could probably benefit a lot from it.

I think millet sprays are great, but dried herbs and flowers are a waste of money. Maybe some hamsters enjoy them, but in my 15 years of keeping hamsters none of mine have. If I put it in their cage, they don't give it any attention, and if I mix it in with their food, they leave it. Fresh herbs and flowers are usually popular though.

I would think yes because they are great for enrichment for foraging and have some nutrition or other stuff. I personally love them and use them a lot and always have some and my hamster loves going around his encloser and looking for them and eating them (foraging)
But I think it should be up to the owner and it’s not like you absolutely NEED it but would recommend but it also depends on the hamster.

No, they are not a necessity.

Food is a necessity. Enrichment is a necessity. Forage treats are a great way to provide both.
