I have 2 bin cage about 450 sq inches of floor space. I was wondering if i could keep anything in it. keep in mind it has bars on the sides

rules:
no mice nor gerbils (my parents hate them and i cant even find one)

about the same cost as hamsters, nothing too expensive

While 450 is considered the minimum for hamsters, I and many others don't recommend it for keeping a hamster. In my experience owning 3 hamsters, none are happy in anything less than 800 sq inches and even then require new toys or new enrichment sometimes. Also consider the ongoing costs of bedding. Smaller cage = more cleaning = more trips to buy bedding. With the bars on the sides, you probably won't be able to fit much bedding in there anyway, which is crucial for burrowing animals. Unfortunately I don't recommend or know of any animals that would be happy in a bin cage of that size :(

idk if something like this can be done in a plastic bin, but maybe grow a live garden in it for your hamster to explore?

The hamham guru on HH (Simply HamHam~ on YouTube) did this using eco earth, sprays and some live plants and made a video on it if you want to do that!
