I got my hamster just two days ago and true to what i expected he's been active at night and running on the wheel.

I haven't done the first spot clean yet, i was planning on doing it either tonight or tomorrow just so he's settled enough that it won't stress him too much. But today i was giving him a treat and checked in around the cage and his wheel has a bunch of hard stuff all around the inner part?? I don't know what it is, if i should just clean it now, or how to prevent it.. Does anyone have any advice?

Looks like pee to me. Mine pees in his wheel every night and sometimes it globs up like this.  My wheel is plastic (Niteangel) so it sticks to the sides. I was advised not to clean it every day because they might just do it more to mark their space.  I cannot go more than 2-3 days though because it starts to smell.  I have been using hot water, plus a mild disinfectant, but someone just told me to only use water so that some of the scent stays. I’m going to do that starting with the next cleaning, so I can’t say whether that will help prevent him from doing it so much.  Or maybe some of them just don’t want to stop running to go hop into their potty (sand bath) lol!  I guess it’s harmless to leave it in there, but ew!  2-3 days tops for me!  I hope this helps.

Hey!

That's probably pee. My hamster does it ALL THE TIME.

I'd recommend washing it with warm water and drying it with paper towels. Make sure it's completely dry before putting it back in the cage :)

But don't worry. It's not that harmful to leave it unless it's smelling (which I'm guessing it doesn't yet).

Good luck with your new hamster!

Yes, it is probably your hamster's urine. I would suggest rinsing it with hot water every couple of days, I also use a one- part water one-part hamster safe vinegar (use white vinegar) and then rinse it again.
