I’m currently building a lid for my diy cage, but I don’t know what size mesh mice can get through. The smallest they had a Home Depot was 1/4 inch, but I’m worried they can fit through that. I found 1/8 on amazon, and also really really small mesh made for bugs. For reference, my Syrian hamster has 1/2 inch mesh. Which one would be good for my mice?

Ps, they are fairly small, but a little fat. I’m also planning on getting more mice soon, so I want a size that could contain younger mice as well.

I use 1/4 inch mesh for my hamsters, it would be way too big for mice, probably half of that or smaller.

To my knowledge, for mice you need 1/4 Inch. For extra safety you can double layer the 1/4 inch mesh (to create 1/8) :)

I’ve never had an issue with using 1/4 inch mesh for my mice. I’ve even gotten away with using 1/2 inch for some of my larger males.

One more thing, I doubt that they could completely fit through the 1/4 inch but I’m Concerned about them getting stuck/ smaller future mice getting through

From my experience 1/4” mesh is perfectly fine as long as you have the 1/4” squares and not bars or something. Even tiny mouse heads can’t fit through them. :)
