I just bought an ikea detolf for my two mice. I haven’t built it yet, but I just bought some more things to put in it. I think I got a bigger wheel, a two chamber hide/platform, and like a 12 pack of random chews and bridges and stuff. I’m not sure if I have enough stuff to make the cage as crowded as my mice like it though. Does anyone have any ideas for toys and accessories to add? They need to be able to fit in a detolf, which is pretty narrow, and preferably diy or pretty cheap to buy. Thank you in advance!

ladders from the bird section of pet stores (or ones you make yourself using popcicle sticks and nontoxic glue), my mice love to chew on sea-grass huts as well.  One of my favorite cheap clutter items is the cardboard cup holders you get from fast food places, I just stack them messily over each other in open spaces and theyll crawl around between them and chew pieces off to take to their nest (as someone who has worked fast food, if you go in and ask for one, I'm sure there will be an employee nice enough to give you one)!  You can also give them loose coco fiber in a container to dig in, but they WILL make a massive mess of it lol!  I'll also bunch up some hay to make a little bush, they love to create little tunnels going through it.  Those are just what I can think of off the top of my head!  For cheap sprays to put around the cage, you can find oat and millet at petsmart or petco, and you'll probably get more for your money from the bitd section than the small animal section!!  You can also usually use reptile hides and decorations in mouse cages, but if they have fake plants you'll need to remove them!  (check facebook marketplace and other selling groups if you can, they can have some awesome accessories and clutter items for very cheap!!  Always be safe shopping locally though, make sure you have parents with you and meet in public places to exchange items!) If you want to save up for some things in the future, mice would probably enjoy grapevine wood and cork flats (wouldn't recommend the logs as much for mice because they WILL pee inside and it'll be difficult to clean.  If you live near a petsmart, they are currently rebranding all of their rodent and small animal stuff, so they've been putting a lot of items on amazing sale lately, you'll just need to check in every week or so to see what they have on sale that week. Let us know if you have any questions!!!

Egg cartons are always a great go to! Cardboard boxes stuffed with tissue and loads of holes in every side to climb through. Toilet paper rolls. Playgrounds made out of popsicle sticks are absolutely amazing too as you can do all kinds of things! Mice love hide and seek games and running through things and climbing. With that in mind, you can make a lot of those things even out of cereal boxes or Amazon boxes for more sturdy structures.

Thank you for the ideas! It turns out it’s going to take a few weeks to make the lid for my detolf, so I have lots of time to make all their new toys.
