Aww! Is that Nuke and Bullet in the top right corner of your profile picture, Sarah? They're so cute! Fitting names for little lively gerbils!
And yeah, Lil Mushroom, they did indeed knock their water bowl over and I had to remove the wet bedding-- thankfully it was on a platform, so it was only a little that spilled on the bedding. We had to go on an emergency water bottle hunt. Walmart's pet section didn't have any, and Petco just had ones for wire cages, so we ended up getting a Wet-Your-Whistle which... well, I can't describe it, but here it is: https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/everyyay-small-animal-wet-your-whistle-small-animal-ceramic-waterer. It's pretty sturdy, although they have kicked some bedding in it, which is such a gerbil thing to do
Still waiting for that water bottle to arrive!
Today they busied themselves making tunnels. Looooots of tunnels. The paper bedding, which was originally under the aspen, is all kicked up to the top now! You can even see their burrows through the glass in some spots. Their bendy bridges are all underground, but I suppose that's how they like it. I may get a divider or cage topper so that I can separate the wheel and water from the rest of the bedding. For now I'm glad they're so busy digging-- they didn't have much bedding at the shelter, so they must be having a ball!
I'm currently feeding them Higgins VitaGarden, but it's not super nutritious so I'm ordering Robin's gerbil mix as soon as her shop opens again after the holidays. I haven't heard a lot about her gerbil mix, but judging from the quality of her hamster mixes, I trust Robin to have created a great food. What do you all feed your gerbils? I need some tips! I tried giving them spinach as a snack, but they nibbled at it and ignored it haha. Too bitter, I guess!
