Hi! Im looking to upgrade my male Syrian Hamsters cage, (Wilbur) I need it to not that much money, and not be a IKEA DIY (because my dad is picky, and doesn't want to go to ikea, etc), His current cage is a 40 gallon tank that comes to around 648 sq inches, but it is much too small, and im starting to have trouble fitting enrichment inside of it, im also looking for something that totals to around 800 sq inches or more,
any help or tips are very appreciated, thanks! :)

Hmmm, possibly a bin cage? A 200qt can have anywhere from 800-1000sq inches of floor space (depends on the bin). Right now a lot of stores have "holiday" 200qt bins, so they should be relatively easy to find. They're only around $30 or so :). You will need to DIY the lid, but there are a TON of YouTube tutorials and it's pretty easy and straightforward!

Is it possible to do a full DIY? Or do you have a current piece of furniture (eg bookshelves) that you can turn into an enclosure?

75 gallon tanks or larger are also nice and you can find them on craigslist or other second hand websites for quite cheap!

Niteangel has their bigger world and vesta enclosures as well, which can be good if you get the large size :)

Just an FYI, 200 QT bins are actually closer to 550-600 sq inches because of how bins slope. :)

The bin measurements given are the top of the bin, which you can notice slopes down as it goes to the bottom making it smaller as it goes down.

The only bin that is over 800 sq inches is the Christmas tree bins, which are about 1000 sq in but due to only being 13" tall it makes it unsuitable for Syrians as you can't fit enough bedding :)

Can you find a fish tank! They’re kinda expensive new but you can find awesome deals on used ones on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace (I got a 75 gallon tank for 20$)! :)

Ahh okay! I heard about the Christmas tree bins but I wasn't aware of the low height. Thanks for telling me!

I would look into an aquarium. You may still find some black friday deals. Try to find just the tank, and then you can go about finding a mesh lid online or somewhere else. Alternatively, look on FB Marketplace, Craigslist, and so on.

Meshing a rabbit cage could also work, but you have to be careful about bar chewing and they can look kind of tacky. However, these can be huge and cost effective; you can easily get a 1200sq in cage for under $100 doing this.

Hi guys! Thanks for all of the tips, I think that when I upgrade, I might connect 2 large bin cages together. Still thinking, but again I dont know yet.

I really like the Niteangel cages. I have three of them myself. I find the tanks are so heavy and you really need a large supportive table to hold up. I can barely lift my 65 gallon one.

It comes in 3 sizes (inner dimensions):

Small: 30L x 15W x 17.7H inches (450sq in of floor space)
Medium: 39.4L x 19.7W x 19.7H inches (776sq in of floor space)
Large: 47.2 L x 19.7W x 23.6H inches (930sq in of floor space)

Hey everybody! I just got all the supplies at home depot to make 2 bin cages that measure (together 1500 sq inches) i will be connecting this with a big tube also, i measured with a tape measurer at the bottom (because bins slope) sooo, ive made the final decision. I should be setting it up monday. Its almost 3x his current home lol.
