Love this story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you read A Hamster Is A Girls Best Friend? Is this story based on it?

I have read that one, haha! Was it obvious?  It was inspired by that! I spent ages reading it, before I even had a hamster or a hamster hideout account! Anyways, thank you so much, chapter 4 will be up shortly  :hamster1:

I was wondering the same thing xD I saw the first post and thought hmm? This looks suspiciously like something I’ve written? The exact same premise and similar plotline, but with different character names. I didn’t want to say anything in case it was simply coincidence, but since this story was directly inspired by my one, could I ask that you give me credit? :) HGBF was an idea that was completely my own and took over three years for me to write, so you are using something that I’ve put a great deal of time and effort into.

In future, it’s generally good etiquette to ask a creator for permission before you use their work, and to give credit where it’s due. In the past, other members have created things inspired by my stories and always PMed me to ask for permission beforehand. I have always been supportive of this, and showcased or linked their work in my own thread so that HGBF readers could check it out.

I’m totally fine with you writing and posting your own story inspired by HGBF, but I wish you had tried to get in touch with me beforehand, or at least credited HGBF as inspiration. Obviously it isn’t that big of a deal in this case, since these are just stories posted for fun on a hamster forum. But if you tried to do this for something more serious, such as a school or work assignment, you could get in trouble for plagiarism. Please remember this the next time you are heavily basing your work on someone else’s!

I didn't even remember your username or anything, as I'd read the story months ago, when I didn't even have an account here.  :worried:  It wasn't really my fault... (i think?) I know what plagiarism is by the way, and I know that it's a serious thing! I usually don't ever take inspiration from things to avoid this.  :cheeky:  I never even directly thought of your story for inspiration, I guess it just ended up being similar.   I'm sorry if I made you upset.  :gloomy:  I didn't "heavily base my work" on your story either! It was just kind of a coincidence because your story is always kind of something that I think about, but I could never remember who wrote it or what it was even called. All I remembered was the basic plot. I didn't try to copy you, and I'm new to the forum so i don't really know how to work PMs.   I can give you credit though! Or delete the story entirely! I can always make a new one no problem! I'd prefer to have a story I completely came up with myself anyways   Sorry if I made you upset, that wasn't at all my intention and I didn't even remember who you were. : But now that i do, i'd just like to say that I really liked your story, and I think you're a super talented writer   Sorry about that :(

(Sorry if this comes off as rude btw, that is not my intention, I'm just not the best at portraying emotion through text, so just imagine me saying everything here in a friendly tone of voice!  :valentine:  I did also try my best to use emojis to help, but I know that's not always clear..) Sorry again!  :embarassed: Please let me know if you'd like me to give credit or delete the story! I can do either! It's all up to you, I don't mind  :D

Edit: I will refrain from updating the story until I receive a response! Just to be polite/cautious <3 Sorry again  :crybuckets:

Edit 2.0: I gave you credits! You can go see the begining of chapter one for the credits, and another apology  Sorry again! <3

Don’t worry dustyham, I’m not upset :) I understand accidentally making your story a lot like one you’ve read before without really realising—I’ve done that too!

I think there’s a difference between taking a very commonly used trope (e.g. a story about a young girl and her hamster), and taking an idea that’s more specific, in this case: a story about a girl and her hamster who have a telepathic connection and become best friends throughout. If the similarity was obvious enough for, not just me, but another member to notice as well, I think it’s fair to say that you *have* based your story on mine, even if you weren’t totally aware of it while writing :)

I hope my first post didn’t come across as harsh—I do understand that you are a relatively new member and may also be new to writing, so you might not be familiar with these things, and that’s okay! We’re all on this forum to learn, whether that’s learning about hamster care, or otherwise!

Please do continue with this story, I think you’re doing a great job and I wouldn’t want this to put you off writing. And thanks for giving credit :)

Hi! I don’t think you need to stop writing! This story is really just for fun, and midget is happy for you to keep writing. There are actually lots of stories that have talking animals, so I don’t think it’s a huge problem since midget gave approval. I’ve accidentally plagiarised someone’s words, just because I’m not conscious of it (thankfully none of these were for school or published). Also, it’s great to write, not continuing the story might put you off writing. Your story was very interesting and I’d love to hear more. :D It’s not possible to delete topics on HH either unless you PM dusty, the admin of this forum, but he doesn’t really come online and read PMs. :)

I absolutely agree with Lilly! There are several members reading and enjoying this story, and I have no problem at all with you continuing - in fact, I’d love to see where you take this! Even if the basic premise was similar to mine, you can take this story in whatever direction you want, and really make it original and your own  I’m sorry I made you feel bad, that honestly wasn’t my intention. Even if you don’t feel up to writing more right now, give it some time and you’ll hopefully see that all of this was just a harmless misunderstanding and isn’t a big deal at all. I wanted to point out some general etiquette when it comes to creating/sharing things online in the hope you and others will find it informative, but I never wanted to make you think that your writing was bad, or not worth continuing. The thing I care most about is that you are getting enjoyment out of this! I want the hamster tales board to be a safe space where everyone feels supported and encouraged in their writing :) I will be supportive whether you continue this, or start a new story, but please don’t let this little blip put you off writing completely <3
