Quick Intro:

 

This story is about a girl named Willow, who adopts a little roborovski hamster, who she names Sage! The story will follow all the fun the two have together, creating an inseparable bond between them. Everyone, even Willow's parents, is so confused as to how and why a hamster is her best friend. It's just a silly old rat, right? Wrong. Willow actually has the ability to talk to hamsters. Well, one hamster. Sage. So the two communicate telepathically. But all fun must come to an end sometime...

 

I will try my best to update the story daily, adding a chapter each day. Although I do have school amongst other things, so i may not be able to post everyday. I hope you'll understand! Without further ado, here's chapter one!

Chapter One - The day everything changed...

 

It was a sunny morning in June. Willow woke up at around 8am, as per usual. She got up and went to the kitchen. "Morning" she said "Good morning sweetheart! How would you like to come down to the pet store with me today? We need some more treats for Teddy." her mother looked down at the fluffy brown dog, who then tilted his head. "Mmm.. sure." replied Willow "Great!" her mother said, grinning.

 

Willow opened the pantry door. 'There's nothing to even eat here' she thought. She finally settled for some probably stale, sugary cereal. She prepared herself a bowl, and ate it all super fast. She hadn't eaten dinner the night before, due to the overload of books she had to read for her 'stupid summer reading list' as she'd call it. She put her dishes in the dishwasher and then went back to her bedroom to get ready.

 

"MOOOMM" she called out "I'M READYYY" her mother came rushing down the stairs. "Willow Rose Thompson. We do not shout like that in this house." "Sorry mom.." she said, looking down at her shoes. "Let's go." her mother said as she swiftly grabbed the car keys from the hook on the wall.

 

Willow looked out the car window, her chin resting on her hand. When all of a sudden she got a text. She glanced at the glowing screen. It was her best friend, Stacey. 'WILL. YOU NEED TO SEE THIS! SO CUTE' there was an image attached to the message. She opened the image and was greeted by the cutest thing she had ever seen. A little fluffy hamster. 'OMG!' she replied. "Who are you texting?" her mother asked, "Stacey" Willow replied. 

 

They pulled into the parking lot. 'JOHN'S PET STORE' the glowing sign read. Well, technically it said 'JOHN'S ET STORE' the neon sign for the 'P' was broken, and didn't light up. Willow's mom opened the door. Ding! There was a little bell attached to the door. They walked in. "How can I help you ladies today?" an old man said from behind the counter. Willow assumed this must be John. "We're looking for dog treats!" Willow's mother answered. "Aisle 5" the man replied.

 

"Mom, can I go look around? I'm bored" asked Willow "Sure babe." replied her mother, too wrapped up in reading the ingredients list on the bag of dog treats to even look at her own daughter. Willow walked around, at first, just browsing. But then, she saw the little glass tanks that she never ever payed any attention to. 'Those must have some hamsters like the one Stacey showed me!' she thought. She walked over, unintentionally speed-walking. She pressed her face against the glass. A little head popped out of the fluffy bedding. She gasped.

 

"MOM MOM MOM MOM MOM!!" she practically screamed, running towards her mother. "THERE'STHISADORABLEHAMSTERYOUHAVETOSEECOMEQUICKINEEDTOADOPTHER" "WILL! Slow down. sweetie. I can't understand you. What was that about a hamster?" Willow took a deep breath "So, there's this adorable hamster called a ro.. robo.. roborovski? Anyways, she's only 10$, and i do have some old birthday money saved up.." "A hamster you say?" Willow nodded, grinning "Whatever. As long as you do ALL of the work. I'm not spending a single penny, you hear me?" she nodded again.

I'm so sorry for not updating this!! I was super busy, but I hope to start regularily updating again. I won't have a guaranteed schedule, but i'll try to post every 1-4 days! Sincerely, Kenzie & Dusty    Without further ado, here's chapter two!

 

Chapter Two - Shopping!!!

 

'YESS!!' Willow thought. A real life hamster. Wow. "THANKS MOM!" Willow exclaimed very loudly. Her mom chuckled and shook her head slightly. Did she make a mistake letting Willow get such a filthy creature? Willow ran up and down all the aisles, looking for the hamster supplies. When finally, she saw them. She felt like she was in heaven. All the bedding, cute toys, cages.. She felt like she belonged here. She grabbed a pamplet from the rack, it was labeled 'HAMSTERS - THE BASIC GUIDE'. She unfolded the paper and started reading. She read it over and over and over again. She didn't want to make a single mistake with this. Once she knew the basics, she picked up another pamphlet about hamster diets, and their nutrionary needs. Then she grabbed another pamplet, and another, and another.

 

"Willow?" she heard her mother calling out for her from the other aisle. Willow frantically picked up all the pamphlets and shoved them in her hoodie's kangaroo pouch pocket. She then picked out all her hamster items. She picked a cage she thought was big enough, a few cute plastic hideouts, some colourful paper-based bedding, a few cute wooden chews, some berry-flavoured yogurt drop treats, a bag of oxbow food, a food dish and water bottle, and a little plastic wheel. 'Perfect' she thought. She placed everything in an empty cart she found at the end of the aisle. She wheeled the cart over to the little glass tanks, that contained the small animals. She peered into the smallest one and saw the hamster. Her hamster. She was drinking water out of her little water bottle. Willow gazed in at her in awe, when all of a sudden..

 

"Young lady! Are you looking to adopt the hamster?" asked the pet shop owner. "Erm.. yes!" she said swiftly. Her heart was still racing from being startled by the old man, who appeared to be balding. He grinned at her, and grabbed a set of keys attached by a keyring from his shirt pocket. He unlocked the little glass tank and scooped the hamster into a teeny cardboard box. Willow could've sworn she heard a squeaky voice saying 'hey!' just as the man picked her up. She shook her head. It must have been her imagination. They went to the checkout. Willow's mother was already there waiting for her.

 

"What took you so long?" "There were uh.. a lot of decisions to be made!" "Ok.." Willow stared at her feet. The continuous beeping of the scanner was driving her nuts. Finally, it stopped. "Your total is 181.29$! And that includes the adoption fee for this little one!" he held up the box containing the small creature. Once again, Willow could've sworn she heard a tiny voice saying 'Put me down! Arghh!!' She ignored it. Willow whipped out her zebra print wallet and took out 200$. She payed for the things, and her and her mother walked out of the store.

 

That's the end of chapter two! I hope you enjoyed it It was a bit shorter than chapter one, but I'm still satisfied with the way it came out! I have so many ideas for this story, and I can't wait to write more

Chapter 3 - Home

 

Willow and her mother were now in the car, driving back home. The drive was pretty short, about 7 minutes, as they lived in a small town. Willow was peering through the air holes in the box at her new hamster. "Hello in there!" she whispered softly. But then, the hamster stopped dead in it's tracks, turned around and stared back at her. "Hello? Can you hear me? squeaked a small, soft voice that seemed to be coming from inside the box. 'I can talk to hamsters?' she thought 'I can talk to a hamster.' "That's right" she heard the squeaky voice say 'You can hear my thoughts?' asked Willow, in awe "Well of course silly! We're a pair!" said the little voice excitedly 'What's that supposed to mean? I've never heard of that.. a pair.' thought Willow. But she wasn't able to think for much longer about the hamster. SCREEECHH! The car came to a sudden stop. They had almost just been caught in the middle of an accident! Three cars were involved in the collision, and Willow's mother had just barely avoided being hit. Willow made sure her hamster was okay.

 

When they arrived home, Willow's mother was carrying all the bags, because Willow had to bring in her new pet. "Look Daddy!" said Willow holding out the opened box. "A mouse?" he asked "No silly! A hamster! Duh!" Willow walked cheerfully up to her bedroom carrying the box. She set up the cage, making sure everything was perfect! No excuses. Once it was finally ready, she released her hamster from the cramped box, to the "spacious" enclosure. "Eek!" screeched the hamster "Do you like it?" Willow asked "It's.. it's small.." said the voice, whimpering a bit "What do you mean? It was the biggest one the pet store had!" Willow said, sounding extremely offended "Well, you see... us hamsters have lots of energy! So we need to get out that energy! A small enclosure is cramped, and stressful for us hamsters!" said the hamster, sounding very intelligent "I don't believe one bit of it! You're so small! What would you even do with all that space? You have your wheel to burn your energy on!" "This is why us small animals are so often mistreated!" pouted the hamster "Our size has nothing to do with our needs! And speaking of this wheel.. it's so tiny not even a baby could run on it! My back will curve!" said the hamster "Who cares? That wont hurt you." scoffed Willow "It can cause back issues!" This conversation went on for about two hours, until Willow finally learnt proper hamster care.

 

"Alright, I'll buy you all your upgrades and everything tomorrow! There was a return policy on the supplies I bought" Willow said grinning.

 

That's all for chapter three! I don't think I mentioned this before, but this story takes place about a week before school starts! Also, is there anything you'd like to see implemented into the story? A character, a hamster, a plot point? Let me know! I'll try my best to incorporate all ideas! (With credits ofc!) Chapter Four - Upgrades

 

It was the next day, and as Willow promised, she was going to return all the old hamster items, and exchange them for new, better ones! Willow woke up at around 10am that morning, and sleepily got out of bed. She walked down the stairs, yawning. She made herself breakfast. Scrambled eggs and toast. She scrolled through Instagram as she ate. She nearly choked when she saw that her best friend Stacey had gotten two guinea pigs! She liked her post and commented 'LOVE THEM EEEE!!! You've gotta see my new hamster!'. Shortly after, as Willow was putting her dishes away and tidying up from her breakfast, she received a text from Stacey, demanding to see her new hamster! (Politely of course   ). So, Willow did the nice thing and went upstairs to take pictures of her new pet. Normally she would've just facetimed her, but she had horrible bed head, and large eye bags. She opened up the hamster cage. "Hello? Where are you?" she asked. She heard a small squeak, "I'm trying to sleep!" said the hamster, crawling out from the hideout. "But it's like 11am? Why aren't you up sleepyhead?" Willow said playfully "I'm not sure if I forgot to mention this, but hamsters are nocturnal." said the robo while staring at Willow. "Also do I have a name yet?" asked the creature "A name? I haven't even thought of a name!" Willow said facepalming. "Well, my litter-mates called me Sage, so perhaps that could be my name?" Sage asked politely "Of course! Sage.. that's such a cute name! Perfect!" said Willow with delight.

 

After a bit of persuading, Willow was finally able to get some cute pictures of Sage to send to Stacey. "Thanks Sage! I really ought to get ready now, today I'm gonna go get your cage upgrades!" "Oh wonderful!" squealed Sage "I can't wait! I'll be sleeping if you need me.." the hamster yawned.

 

Willow picked out her clothes, brushed her teeth, brushed her hair, did some light makeup and chose her jewelry! She grabbed a purse, stuffed her phone and wallet inside, and went downstairs. Her mom was outside, on the deck drinking coffee. 'Coffee at noon?' Willow thought. She was used to her mother's strange behaviour though. "Hey mom.." Willow said as she walked out onto the deck, sliding on her flip-flops while doing so. "Hey sweetheart! You look nice! Got any plans today?" asked her mom, smiling while sipping her black coffee. "Well, actually I was wondering if you could take me to the pet shop again today? I have some returns to make.." "Like what? Was something wrong with your products?" "Yes but no.." Willow said. "Anyways, there was a return policy on them. So I can get my money back and buy the new things!" she said eagerly "Okay! I'll drive you, just give me 30 minutes to get dressed." said her mom "Sure thing mom!" Willow hopped back inside, removed her shoes and went upstairs to her bedroom, to gather all the things that needed exchanging. 

 

As Willow was gathering the items from inside the cage, Sage came out! "Hi Sage!" "H-Hello.." Sage yawned "Whatcha doing?" she asked Willow "Oh! I'm gathering everything to exchange at the pet store!" replied Willow "That's fine, but where will I go? Y'know, while you're gone?" said Sage. Willow didn't even think about this! "Umm, you can stay in the box you came in! I'll put in some bedding, and your smallest hideout!" "Deal!" squeaked Sage.

 

Willow had all the items gathered, as she walked to the car with her mom. They were en route for the pet store. "What did you name the hamster again? Did you even name it? I can't remember.." asked Willow's mother. "Sage! I decided this morning." "Aw, what a lovely name!" her mother said. They pulled into the parking lot, and walked through the door. Sage went and picked up all her upgrades, making sure to pick out the best and safest things for Sage. They went to the cash and exchanged everything. Willow even got 20$ back! They left the pet store, and drove home. Willow was so happy that she could now provide proper hamster care.
