I initially posted about wanting a second hamster  but someone on facebook recommended that I should get a duprasi instead of a dwarf hamster as even though duprasis are nocturnal, they do come out to play in the day (as I wanted more playtime with a pet during the day but didn't want a pet with relationship dynamics like guinea pigs/gerbils). My hamster does come out in the day and is quite cuddly but I would like maybe 10% more cuddle time...

How does a Duprasi compare with a hamster? Initially I thought it may not be the best pet for me, as I use a pet boarder when I go on holiday and gerbil tanks are quite heavy but I found a pet boarder who has spare hamster cages AND gerbil tanks. Diet seems quite similar to hamster albeit with more dried insects and protein.

My 100 cm by 50 cm cage is on the floor now so I thought I could get an ikea linmon table (100 cm by 60 cm) and put the tank on that table (with the cage underneath), so it wouldn't take up more floorspace..

I haven't had a duprasi but it's a long term goal of mine to get one! Duprasi are quite a bit smaller, and I believe more relaxed when it comes to cage size (in fact they're often described as extremely laid back, even lazy), so I would expect a 100x50cm cage to be ok for one. It seems in line with what I see people house them in online.

A duprasi will be harder to find than a Syrian hamster. They occasionally turn up in rescues but most likely you'll need to buy from a breeder, which fortunately there are a good number of in the UK. Many breeders will be willing to use a pet courier so location is not necessarily a limiting factor in getting a duprasi.

Unless you're set on getting a Duprasi/other rodent, maybe look into small pets that are awake during the day like a bird?
