It's Jellie, and she's now somewhat inactive
I've had my channel (randomally, linked in signature) for ~4 months now and I currently have almost 100 subscribers and most of that can be credited towards taking in what your audience likes and creating more of that.
For example, I found out that cage tours and shorts often did better than educational videos, so I try to make more of those.
Adding on, having a good camera, videography skills and editing skills are all things that can help a lot IMO. Of course the latter two will improve with more experience, but it's still good to have these. I find myself often not being drawn to some channels despite liking their topics (eg hamster care) but their video quality, lighting, etc is not appealing. I'm not going to call out specific channels as obviously that would be extremely rude, but some things that often are the culprit include shakiness, bad lighting, blurry camera, etc.
If you plan to continue your channel for a longer time I suggest investing in a gimbal (you can get them for $10 cheap on amazon) to help with shakiness and overall smooth video taking as well as a better light source (again, cheap ring lights off amazon work fine).
Promoting your channel to a certain extent will also help. Posting about it on other websites (like you alreayd do here), opening an instagram for your youtube account, reminding people to subscribe in the video, telling your family and friends about it, etc will all help.
Having a good posting schedule is also very important. Sticking to a regular schedule (most people, including myself, post once a week) can help with the hype of a new video. When you have more subscribers, using the premiere mode can also work. Without regular postings, many people will often unsubscribe if they don't enjoy your channel enough because it's not as interesting to rewatch old videos you've already watched. But if your content is helpful to people it is still possible to gain subscribers when you're inactive: take Sophia and her hamster for example, she's gained more than 75 subscribers without posting because her videos are well edited, have good camera work, and are appealing to their audience.
I have more to say but I'll edit it later when I have more time: i'm in class
