Hello!

I know this isn't a fish forum but I can't join one currently so I thought I'd try here like I did before :)

Is it necessary to have all the fish tank acessories in the tank while cycling the water?

By this I mean substrate, plants, hideouts, etc.

I'm asking as I'll probably be able to get a new tank and start cycling in late November-ish, but I'd have to wait till Christmas time for the acessories. I thought that if I started cycling soon after I got the tank, and then add the accesories to an already cycled tank, then I could get the fish sooner. I was worried though that adding things in would mess up the cycling if it's already cycled.

Thanks!

It's not necessary but better and easier I'd say, because it stop you from disturbing everything :) (in my opinion)

Is that clear? Sorry about not being much help

I asked my sister (the fish nerd of our family circle), and she said it's fine. You can take an empty tank and cycle that for some time, then add the accessories. If there are any traces of ammonia on those accessories, the tank will cycle them out really quickly :)

Sort of? You’ll still need some supplies but not substrate or hides or any kind of decor.

Most of the beneficial bacteria will accumulate in the filter you can’t cycle without a filter though since then the BB can’t build up in the filter media. You’ll also need a heater to maintain a favorable temp for the bacteria if you plan to keep tropical fish, an ammonia source, a water test kit to know how much ammonia to add and when, and tank cleaning supplies like a siphon and 5g bucket to remove nitrates when you get there.

So, you’ll 100% need more than just a tank, but you don’t need absolutely everything if that makes sense.

It is fine to put everything in even live plants (they actually will help get rid of the ammonia) while cycling a fish tank. Personally I think it’s even better because everything is adapted to that water and has already got the good bacteria from the cycling which who’ll be better for your fish.

Yup I'd still have the filter and heater in.

Would it be okay to use one heater for cycling and then a different one for the fish?

Because my current working heater malfunctions from time to time and I'd want a better one for when I have fish but I can't get a new one until xmas time.

That’s fine as long as it can maintain a constant temp. I also forgot to put thermometer on there—also super important, especially with a funky heater. Thankfully they’re only like $6 on Amazon though.
