Hello :)

so i have a 10 gallon tank sitting in my basement quite literally collecting dust (no seriously, theres like an inch of dust at the bottom of that thing)

and in like a month or two i think ill be ready for a new pet, just not anything serious (yes, i know fish are a lot of work, i just mean like not another dog/ hamster or anything like that). so i am just wondering, what types of fish/ amphibians could possibly live in this tank? i know betta fish can (thats what was origanally in it) but can anything else? btw I have a heater and a filter.

thanks!

Marimo moss balls, a betta fish, shrimp, snails, some harlequin rasboras, or even just a bunch of aquatic plants lol.

If you wanted schooling fish, anything under 1” as an adult would be fine for a 10g. A betta would probably be best, though, as they’re very easy to care for and 10g is a lot for them (10g would be a bit of a squeeze for schooling fish).

Fancy guppies can grow to 2.5" and need to live in groups of at least 5, so I'd say no, it wouldn't work. 10 gallons would be too much of a squeeze IMO and I'd recommend a 15-20 gal for a group of 5 so the bioload isn't too high and so they have enough space.

I third the betta idea- a 10G would give them plenty of space and you could even add a shrimp/snail along with the betta. Bettas come in really cool colours too! (have you seen koi bettas?)

I think it’s a round tail betta? There are tons of tail varieties and colors, with a lot of names, so I’d find an ethical fish breeder and look through what they have :

I'd highly recommend joining https://www.fishlore.com/aquariumfishforum/or https://www.fishforums.net/

Not sure which you're talking about. This website shows the different tail types- https://www.koi-bettas.com/tail-types.html

With a 10G I wouldn't put more than 2 snails so the betta (especially if you're getting a male betta, they like their space) can have room to be away from the snails and have enough room to do their thing. Mystery snails, Nerite and Zebra are okay. If the betta is bored they might pick at their eyes+antenna so make sure that the betta has enough enrichment and it's better to have females with tankmates as they're less agressive.

idk if theres any near me. theres a small shop near me which only has aquatics and aquatic supplies, and all of them have these huge tanks and great care. but idk how they breed them, do you think that would be fine?

thanks! the halfmoon is what i was thinking of. for enrichment, i was looking and it seems that lots of plants (real and fake) hides, and maybe even a hammock would be good? anything else you reccomend to have?

Honestly i say just buy pet shop fish- getting one from ethical breeders isn't really much different IMO and it's hard to find one near you that isn't extremely expensive.

Moss balls and java fern are good real plants for beginners- you're going to want to make sure that the light level is enough for the plants you choose and that they can grow in your substrate of choice. For fake plants, silk is the way to go so the betta won't tear their fins. Hideouts are good and hammocks are good as well :)

Betta mirrors can be used from time to time and ping pong balls are fun for bettas to play with!

Community tank for a 10g is a great idea, there isn’t really an “ethical fish breeders” unless you are getting a very advanced marine fish (like a jellyfish or Pygmy octopus which I do not recommend for a beginner. African dwarf frogs are a great alternative to a 10g they need to be in pairs or more and require a heater (which most 10g setups come with) I have two currently here’s a picture of my 10g community tank if your interested

Spoiler
I also recommend cardinal tetras they are schooling fish but they are under an inch so they are pretty small.

No tetras if you want them to be happy, they need at least a 20 gallon.

 Ethical fish breeders do exist.

List of ideas:

3 easten newts

2 African dwarf frog

1 betta

3-6 guppies (of one gender, they breed like rabbits)

3-6 platies (same w guppies)

trio (3) pea puffer fish

shrimp tank (most shrimp are ok)

1-6 Enders (their like the platies & guppies)

trio (3) of scarlet/gem badies

gem danios

dwarf gourami (up to 4, be aware they are very prone to diseses)

honey gourami

least Killifish (the smallest freshwater fish)

snail tank (most snails are fine)

Saltwater:

one clown fish

2 feather dusters

bumblebee snail

many types of coral (idk many, research before you go out and get some, there not like plants)

clown goby

purple firefish

neon blue goby

watchman goby

royal gramma basslet

hope this helps!!

Remember to cycle your tank (:
