Hey Guys!

I don't have a cat but I came across this YT (shorts) video and had some questions.

So basically, the video said something along the lines of this:

Cats don’t drink a lot of water.

Until I bought this cat water fountain.

Now my cat drinks over 50% of what he used to when the water was just in a bowl.

Cats love running water.

Now in the comments, a lot of people were confused so they were like why does this matter (like me) and the replies were similar to the following:

Like humans, cats can dehydrate themselves, and don’t drink water from their bowl even when they are dehydrated. Therefore, them drinking more from a fountain is very important, and any price for these is worth it because your cat will always be hydrated.

Do keep in mind that this is not copied and pasted, this is the gist of the video, and comments.

Is this true, or does it need to be debunked?

Thank you

Cats don't drink still standing water - like in a bowl or cup. For that reason, cat fountains are a brilliant investment. But just as well you can leave your tap dripping to get the same outcome. (That's what I do for my three cats)

Cats get most of their flying from wet cat food. This is why it is not recommended to feed your cat dry food. Because they get their fluid through their food, they don't dehydrate.

You obviously will get an exception to every rule and find a cat that doesn't mind drinking from still standing water but vast majority won't even touch it no matter how thirsty they are.

That's really interesting. Thank you for answering!

Cats can easily get dehydrated as they'd usually get a lot of their moisture from their food, so especially if an owner is feeding just dry cat food (which isn't great) then it can cause kidney problems. Cats don't tend to like drinking from still sources like bowls, though they *will*, just not as much as they *should*. A water fountain is excellent and really does stimulate them to drink more. Think of it like taking a filtered-water bottle with frozen fruit in it to school with you versus some stale old bottle of warm tap water - you're much more likely to have a sip and keep hydrated :)

So yes, as the others have said, this is true. Cats prefer water from moving sources like pet fountains (or dripping taps!). We have one and it is excellent, it filters the water too.

Yes, there is one definite exception to this rule. It's when you have a glass of water on your bedside table to drink overnight. It's like a cat-magnet. Within minutes of drifting off to sleep I get awoken by a "*lap-lap-lap*" noise and it's my cat with his head in my glass of water. Also puddles, paddling pools and toilets.

Oh god, i had to start using water bottles by the bed as opposed to a glass because my three would climb all over me to get to it. No interest in a glass of water if it's left out specifically for them though... I have to leave my tap dripping to get them to drink water. I used to have a lovely cat fountain but it ended up breaking after my German Shepherd decided that it was his paddle pool...

Haha, this exactly! I put a glass of water there as a decoy, but my *actual* water is in a sports-bottle :D

We have this cat fountain and it's excellent. I keep looking out for a mini version for my birds, they'd love it.
