Chapter One

I sat in the ceramic bowl, munching on brightly-colored bits of food. To my side, one of my siblings drank from the water-bottle mounted to the side of the tank. Clink-clink-clink. I ignored the noise and began to shove the sugary food into my cheek pouches. Suddenly, my sibling scurried into the bright pink plastic igloo we called home. And then I saw it. A face, staring directly at me. I stopped stuffing food into my cheek pouches, wondering if I should stand my ground or retreat. The human began to tap on the glass, trying to get my attention. I stood up and turned my head directly towards her and began to stare back.

"Mom, look!" The girl shouted. Almost instantly another face appeared.

"Awwww!" The new face exclaimed. Was that my name? Why did everyone say that when they looked at me?

"Can we get him Mom, please?" Did she just call me a "him"?

"I don't know, honey. We'd have to ask your dad." The one called "Mom" replied.

"Please, Mom? I'm sure he'll be okay with it! Just look at how cute he is!"

"Well..." Mom looked back at me. "Sure, honey. Your birthday is coming up soon anyways." The girl squealed, and as they both hugged I heard the girl say something muffled that I couldn't understand. They both walked away after that, leaving me behind. I had no idea what had just happened. I sat back down, and hopped out of the food dish. I made my way into the food bowl, and found a place among my sleeping siblings and climbed in. I closed my eyes, and after a few moments fell asleep.

Suddenly, I felt the ground moving beneath me and woke up with a start. Everything was moving. My siblings, the floor, the igloo, all of it was shifting and moving. Everything felt so unnatural. And then everything came to a stop. I felt a strong jerk and flew forwards. I had to get out. I tried to scurry out of the igloo, but my siblings were faster. I got squished between the narrow doorway as the others ran past me. I squeaked for help, I was squished so tight I could barely breathe. And then the igloo was lifted up above me. I took a giant gulp of air, and felt so relieved to be able to breathe again. "That's him!" Came a familiar voice. I looked up, and saw the girl and Mom, and another face I had not seen before. All at once a brown box swooped in and suddenly I was surrounded in darkness. I saw a sliver of light and felt soft paper bedding fall around me, then it was all dark again. The box shifted, again and again. I heard muffled voices from outside the box as I slid from side to side, hitting the hard cardboard with each jolt. Everything was so dark. My body hurt so much. Voices came from outside the box that I couldn't understand. What was happening?

That was great! I over-analyzed it by questioning myself like, hamsters can see colors? they can see far enough to see humans looking into their cage? Great piece, please keep it going!

Chapter Two

Finally, the box had stopped moving. I heard a slam that seemed to rock the box I was in, then everything was still. I heard no voices. Looking around, I tried to adjust my eyes to the dark setting. There was a faint scent of my siblings, but I could not see them. The bedding was so shallow that I could feel the cardboard underneath my paws. Everything about this new place was so cold compared to my last home. I wished I could go back to the place I had just been a few moments ago, but it seemed so distant I was already beginning to forget. All too quickly, I heard another slam, and as the box rocked I heard another slam, but louder. The box rocked again. This happened a few more times, and then the voices returned. I could barely make out what they were saying. Something about a new cage? Whatever that was. I attempted to corral the bedding into a corner so I could at least burrow myself into it for some warmth. I felt so tired, and before I knew it the box was moving again. Slams, and more slams. I gave up trying to dig my nails into the cardboard and instead let myself slid around the floor of the box with each turn. Then I was lowered, and the box was still again.

That had been a while ago. I had already emptied my cheek pouches into the bedding and noticed my reserve was steadily growing smaller. I gave up trying to make out what the voices were saying, and instead focused on my food. I could barely see in the dim light, and all at once everything was bright again. I shut my eyes, then opened them once again, squinting. "Hi there little hammie!" I heard from above. I didn't care to look up, though, I was rapidly shoving the bits of food into my cheek pouches out of fear it would be taken from me. "Aww, someone's hungry!" I grabbed the last bit of food and just as I had pushed it into my cheek pouch I felt something grab me. I was lifted out of the box, and was faced towards a hugs monstrosity. It was so brightly colored, it was hard to look at. There was blue, there was red, and a bit of white. "Do you like your new cage, hammie?" said the girl. Before I knew it, a door unlatched and I had been plopped into the cage. I felt soft bedding under my paws, and immediately tried to hide myself under it. It wasn't that deep, but if I couldn't see her, she couldn't see me. I tunneled through the soft, plush bedding until I had felt I was far away enough. Everything felt so cozy and soft, like a dream. I shut my eyes, trying to drift off into sleep, imagining I was back at the pet shop with the rest of my siblings. And when I opened them again, it felt like a nightmare.

Chapter Three

Just as I had began to fall asleep, I felt something grab me again. It seized me and began to lift me into the air. I tried to paw myself out, but one of my front paws was tucked in underneath me. I began to panic. Everything was moving so fast, and it seemed like I was going higher and higher. I felt something under my back paws, then things slowed down a little. I looked down, and just under me was the wire door. In an instant, I had clamped onto one of the rungs with my jaw. I felt a soft tug, then a face appeared to my right. "Hey, let go! Don't you wanna come play with me?" It was the girl again. I returned my focus to the metal bar, and clamped my teeth even harder over the wire. I felt a tug again, then again, and again. But I still managed to keep a hold on the wire. I heard the girl exhale loudly. "Fine then. Go back into your cage, meanie!" She yelled, just before I felt myself lurch forward. In my surprise, I let go of the wire bar. I flew forward and landed on my back, and quickly rolled myself over despite being sore. I heard a loud clang and saw the wire door shut. I heard footsteps and then a slam, like the ones I had heard when I was in the box. After that, everything was so quiet and still, tranquil and peaceful. I yawned, then began to burrow myself under the soft bedding for a nap. It really was shallow, as soon as I had dived in I could feel the plastic under my paws. It wasn't nearly as cozy as it had been a few minutes ago. I paced around the cage, looking for a place to nest. And then I saw it. An igloo! I rushed towards it, bedding flying up under my paws with each stride. It was just like the one I had in my last home, but it was blue and a tad smaller. But all the rest perfect! I searched for an entrance, and as soon as I had found one wiggled myself through the doorway. It seemed like there was so much more bedding in here! In my excitement, I dove in and covered myself with the soft paper. I shut my eyes, and fell asleep.

I woke up, and backed out of the small nest I had made, as well as the igloo. I stretched, yawning as I did so. I was parched, and began to search for a water bottle. While exploring, I found a bright red wheel. I decided to hop on and try it out. I took a few steps to get it spinning, and it bounced around a bit, then I brought it up to speed and began to run. It felt like every step I took hurt my back, but I ignored the feeling and continued running. After a few minutes I hopped off, and was now very, very thirsty. My back ached a little, but it wasn't so bad I couldn't walk, so I continued to do so. After a few laps around the cage, I began to worry. It seemed so small, I could only hope this wouldn't be my forever home. I continued searching, and noticed a tube of some sort. I squished myself through the opening. It was so tight, I could barely push myself through. The food in my cheek pouches pressed against the sides of my jaw, and noticing what was happening I hurriedly tried to empty them in a panic. No, no, no. I couldn't empty them. My paws kicked and scratched at the plastic, but I couldn't get any farther up. It felt like I was suffocating, being squeezed so tightly. It was even worse than when the thing had grabbed me earlier. I squeaked for help, but no one came. I felt like my vision was closing in, my eyesight was getting blurrier by the second. I huffed and puffed for air, but I knew I wouldn't last long like this. Was this the end?
