I was up feeding my guinea pig Lulu and I noticed that her urine was dark orange and I was wondering if this was pigmentation from the vegetables I have been feeding her (romaine lettuce, kale, red leaf lettuce, tomatoes, and bell peppers are all I’ve fed within the past 3 days) or if it is a UTI.

Is it okay to not feed vegetables for the next couple day to see if it clears up?

Any advice will be appreciated:)

Hello!

If I'm not mistaken, urine with a more orangey tint is typical in GPs because of their diet :)

How old is Lulu? If she's young and still on a mainly alfalfa diet, it could be because of the calcium in her diet. Kale is also on the high side with calcium so it could be that. I remember when my rabbit was young, she had thicker orangey urine because of the alfalfa and I asked the vet, and he said it was normal for GPs and rabbits to have urine like that.

If she peed on a pee pad/fleece/bedding, it could also be that the colour or that brought out orange tints more.

I'd probably still feed veggies- maybe less of a variety to see if this could help to see if it's a calcium problem. Romaine and cilantro are good for that.

I'm by no means that well versed in GPs, so I'd wait for another member to respond too :)
