Hi, Aces bday is literally in 2 weeks! It is confirmed that we are getting him a bin! I have been looking at other pets online and need some help. Here are some things I want. (also, please don't worry about Ace - he is in great care and is getting even better stuff) - Anyways here is what i am looking for-

EDIT: I am so sorry to say that my dear Ace has passed away on MAY 24. This would now be 1 pet. I am going to take a week or 2, before I am getting started on new pet stuff :)

  • Fairly non expensive (i dont mean less than 40 dollars, just not too expensive and no REALLY big ongoing costs)
  • Handleable
  • Social to humans
  • Not nocturnal (not a big concern of mine, it can be nocturnal, just a preferation)
  • NOT A FISH
  • fun
  • not to big
  • something you can get at a petstore or breeder (not off of ebay or something)

I need ideas! Thank you

Not very easy pet, but parakeet? There tiny, usaly only 5-7 inches, there very social, non- nocturnal, and 7saly love being handled. But I would recommend getting from a breeder rather than a petstore, but never get them shipped, there basically every thing you discrbed, but are usaly a lot of work and expensive.

Honestly, I wouldn't consider any pets 'easy'. Not all pets are sociable or handleable. The pet itself may be semi-cheap, but all the supplies, accesories, food, and other neseccities are going to be well above. (oh, and petstores are quite honestly a bad choice when it comes to buying a pet, craigslist/adoption is by far the best choice) Hope I didn't come off as rude <3

Maybe a reptile might be nice? Reptiles aren't exactly very social with humans, but compared to many other animals, they are cheap. And depending on the species you want, they can be both nocturnal, dirunal, and crepescular.

I personally would stray away from any birds as they are usually very expensive, require a lot of time and money, and live a long time (getting a bird is usually a lifetime commitment depending on the species. A lot of large birds such as macaws do outlive their owners) Birds are also very loud, which may or may not disturb your current hamster Ace.

Mice sound like a possibility. They’re not too expensive compared to some other pets. I’ve also found that they’re generally much more friendly and up to being handled than hamsters. My family has kept mice since I was little, and I’ve only ever had one bite me. Anyway, just make sure to do a lot of research and develop a genuine interest in an animal if you decide you want another one.

I agree that mice could be an option. They are fairly easy pets in comparison to other animals. They are also not as expensive as say a dog, however I wouldn’t call them a “cheap” pet. The bulk of the costs will come from vets bills as they are prone to many illnesses such as URIs, lumps/bumps (tumours/abscesses/cysts etc) and organ failure.

Once tame they are usually quite handleable. However, it depends entirely on the individual, I have had very cuddly mice who love cheek rubs and massages as well as more reserved ones. As for being social around humans, it also depends on the individual.

Mice are crepuscular, meaning that they are most active at dawn and dusk. From my experience they tend to be more active during the day than hamsters are, though they do still sleep a lot.

Mice are not fish.

Yes, they are fun, though they can be quite stressful, especially when multiple are ill at once.

They are not that big, though they still require large enclosures. With mice they need to be very enriching and crowded. My rule of thumb is “It is almost impossible for a cage to be too crowded with mice, if there is a gap or open area, fill it.”

While technically yes you could buy mice from a pet shop, I wouldn’t want to personally support it. At least in the UK (I can’t say for other places) there are quite a lot of reputable mouse breeders.

However, as Remy said, please only commit to an animal(s) if you have a genuine interest and desire to commit to them. If you can look after more pets, then great, but I wouldn’t want Ace’s care to be compromised. :)

I don't necessarily recommend mice.

Mice are sociable-ish.

Female mice, need to be kept in at least pairs, preferably three or more.

Male mice (in the US atleast) need to be kept alone or neutered a pretty risky procedure.

They are nocturnal/crepuscular.

Diet is very complex. No store bought food (in the USA as far as I know)  is suitable.

The most common 'minimum' is 20 gallons, but I don't believe that is suitable, mice are very active, I recommend 40+ gallons.

You need to fill their cage with supplies, you don't want to see the bedding.

They need a 8 in wheel.

Not all mice are going to want to be handled. Female mice generally don't care to be held much. Male mice, are more sociable, but it depends on the animal. My current male mouse hates humans.

They should have a lot of bedding, mice love burrowing.

They also should have a lot of hanging toys to climb on, assuming they're able. (My boy is blind and can't climb)

Mice make great and lovely pets, but no pet is going to not have cons.

Note; Toys/cages/bedding/general supplies can be expensive.

Hope this helps.

edit; I forgot to add that mice from petstore's are often sick, females are also often pregnant from stores.

I’ve heard a bit about mice in America. It’s strange because it seems a lot harder to achieve proper care in the US. For example I agree, their diet is very complex however, here in the UK there are a few pre made mixes that meet their requirements. As well as it isn’t all that hard to find neutered males or vets who can safely complete the procedure, allowing them to live with females. I’ve also heard a lot of mice in the US come from feeder lines since In many areas (I believe) live feeding is still legal. Correct me if I’m wrong!

Is live feeding illegal there?

I personally very much disagree with live feeding unless absolutely needed, but it's a very common practice in the US.

I scoured the market for a decent food before I got my blind boy, Rascal, and personally couldn't find a single mix that had appropriate GA, so I had to make my own. It's pretty much impossible to have mice neutered over here from what I know. By that I mean, most vets are going to refuse, and if you find one that's willing from what I've seen, theirs a high risk with it. Petstore feeder mice are kept in a ten gallon aquarium with about 50-80 mice with mixed sexes, hence most females being pregnant unless their too young. One more thing, It is possible to get mice neutered here but just hard, I've never seen one neutered over here.

A Cockatiel!

  • Fairly non expensive (i dont mean less than 40 dollars, just not too expensive and no REALLY big ongoing costs) I’d recommend adopting, in most cases it’s free.
  • Handleable Yep.
  • Social to humans Definitely most of them, they love head scratches!
  • Not nocturnal (not a big concern of mine, it can be nocturnal, just a preferation) They are not nocturnal.
  • NOT A FISH Not a fish.
  • fun yes!
  • not to big yep.
  • something you can get at a petstore or breeder (not off of ebay or something) yes.

I need ideas! Thank you

Please remember to think hard before getting a pet, especially a cockatiel. They are a big responsibility, as any pet. They require suitably sized enclosures. They are a fairly long term commitment (approx 20 years), but very rewarding. Make sure to research a lot on any pet you’re thinking about.

It’s not like that in all places. I’ve personally never seen males and females kept together around where I live. I’ve gotten a lot of mice from pet stores (which isn’t something I support anymore) and I’ve never gotten a pregnant one. :)
