Hello!

All of my fish have unfortunately passed. They were all around 2-3 years old, and didn't live in the best conditions for their last 1/2 year or so, I'm assuming it's a combination of the two. Anyway, a day after they died, the 10 gal broke while I was cleaning it...

I got a 5 gal for free from a family friend, and I've been cycling it for a bit, taking info from Fishlore. I plan to get a betta for the tank.

So part one of the questions- I don't have a picture, but any constructive critism for the set up? I've been trying to make it better and did actual research rather than letting my brother doing and trusting his 'research'

Substrate is glass rocks, about 2cm deep. I have a bunch of silk plants in one back corner for hiding, and a couple others spread around. I have a betta leaf near the surface and shell hideout, log hideout and glass rock throughout the bottom.

My other questions

- Can I put a small grapevine piece in the tank as decor if it's not a sharp piece?

- Recommendations for accessories from Canadian PetSmart or Amazon?

- Is Nutrafin water conditioner okay? My petsmart is sold out of Seachem Prime

- How do you clean out a tank after a fish dies?

Thank you so much! :)

Kind of hard to give constructive criticism on the set up without a pic but it sounds pretty good so far!

Grapevine is fine to add provided you sand down the edges. You may need to soak it so it sinks, though. Mopani might be better so you can avoid this, just note it may stain the water due to its tannins.

I think you sound pretty set on supplies, although you didn’t list what equipment you’re using so if you need recommendations id be happy to offer a few. :)

Nutrafin looks fine to me.

I personally used a dilute bleach solution and wash the tank. Rinse it very well before setting your tank up.

Substrate is glass rocks, about 2cm deep. I have a bunch of silk plants in one back corner for hiding, and a couple others spread around. I have a betta leaf near the surface and shell hideout, log hideout and glass rock throughout the bottom. i would get live plants and playsand washed really good, and if the grass on the rock is fake, i would scrape it off or just get a moss ball, the artifical grass tends to fall of and petentily kill of harm the fish (:

My other questions

- Can I put a small grapevine piece in the tank as decor if it's not a sharp piece? i would not recomend using grapvine wood, cholla and mopani

- Recommendations for accessories from Canadian PetSmart or Amazon? hmmmm?

- Is Nutrafin water conditioner okay? My petsmart is sold out of Seachem Prime yep!

- How do you clean out a tank after a fish dies? do a full clean, good of every thing, and let it air dry

Thank you so much! :) no problem, my fishlore is bettadreams, tropical fish forums unicornblast5000, betta fish forum is bettadreams864 (:

the heater we're using is from the 10 gal - it says suitable for 2-10 gal on it, not sure brand though.

pump is if-s from old tank as well, I'm looking for a sponge one like you said before, what do you recommend?

air pump came with the tank idk what brand

great thanks robin!

hmm I'll see about the live plants - I've seen them used lots but not sure what my parents will think.

From what I've gathered glass rocks are just as good as sand or am I wrong?

There's no grass on the rock, I'll see about a moss ball
