I just got a guinea pig on Monday and this morning I found her under my bed! I got her into my bathtub with a towel and some hay and water. I think she got out through the bars. How can I keep it from happening again? Here is the cage is used if that matters (the XXL one)-https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/animaze-1-door-folding-dog-crate

Hmmmmmm......Is there any way that she could of nudged the door open? I would think that she was too big to squeeze through the bars.

I just remembered, we have those kind of crates for our dogs, and at the bottom, there is a larger gap. Maybe cover it with cardboard?

If you don't already I'd recommend lining the bottom and edges with coroplast or something of the like to both use it as a urine guard and protect the larger gaps on the bottom like ^^ said.

I do remember a time when my friend's baby piggies were able to fit through the holes in a c&c grid, and he used wire mesh just as it's done with hamsters that use gp/bunny cages. Once she grows older she probably won't be able to fit, but I'd also check that the door is secure- I have a dog crate of the same size right now and the door isn't that secure so when Odyssey is in it I usually add a binder clip or two to the door to secure it better.

I hope this helped!

I think the door mustn't have been shut properly because the bars are too small for her to escape. Also guinea pigs should be housed in pairs.

I’ve heard of baby pigs, or even small females, getting out of dog crates through the bars. Usually people just zip the cardboard about 8” high around the whole thing until the pigs get bigger.

she was alone at the pet store (adoption is not a option where I live) so I am currently looking for another.

I believe it. My chinchilla is bigger than a baby gp and got through when I didn’t think she could fit. So I started doing what you just suggested for a dog gate.

My guineas I have a Midwest setup I don’t use now so I use the spare grid gate for the gp.
