Hello!

I plan on adopting a pair of ferrets!

However, I am a little confused on the diet needs. I was hoping to feed them raw food (they are 100% carnivores), but I'm struggling to find what is safe. Here are my questions.

  1. Can I just use raw chicken (or other meats) which are made for humans to cook, but I won't cook them? I could give them some piece with the bone and some without?
  2. Or can I use these? They are freeze dried cat treats by HiLife, they come in chicken and duck (I will swap between chicken and duck every week). Apparently it has 80% protein, 6.5% fat, 0.1% crude fibres, 4% crude ash. I will wet them and mush them before feeding as I heard that was good for ferrets.

Thanks!

(Sorry for the super late reply ...but if you have adopted them already...welcome to the crazy ferret world)

I hope you looked at all those links provided in the last reply. You can give ferrets frozen (then thawed) prey such as chicks. Ive seen rebbits being fed as well (but a whole rabbit is a lot for a pair).

There are a few good quality kibble brands out for ferrets...but look for a minimum 40% protein and around 20% fat.

Depending on the age of the ferrets, it may be hard to change their diets..at least here in the US, most ferrets are from a commercial breeder and are raised on kibble, so they get used to that and may turn their noses up at a new diet. (Mine must be weird since they just started eating the new food right away)

If the treats are just straight meat then they should be fine. You can try them various ways (just out of the package, softened with water, or made into a mush)
