Hello!

My betta and my guppies are in a shared 10 gallon tank, split into two. I know this isn't ideal size, as they used to have a larger one, and my mom got all mad about it.

Anyway, the betta has what looks like fin rot. It's mainly on his two side fins and a little on his longer fins. He's about 1 year old, has a 5 gal space, substrate is aquarium glass bead things, has betta leaf and some silk plants. He doesn't seem to be having much trouble swimming, though we moved switched the fish's sides of the tanks once we noticed so he doesn't have to swim as hard. (the betta's normal side is the one with the filter pump, now he's on the other side)

Questions

-How do I help him?

-Why did this only affect my betta when the guppies seem to have no problem whatsoever?

Thanks!

I'm not too experienced with fish, but possibly stress from being next to the guppies? ( Assuming he's aware that the guppies are next door? ).

I would also ask a fish forum ( Fishlore's great ); they would have a better answer to your questions :)

I'm not allowed on any forums, and I broke that rule with being on HH without my parents knowing (and I'm paraniod that they're going to find out soon....which is why I might leave....) so joining fishlore probably isn't going to be an option.....

According to this link I found (https://www.aquariumcoop.com/blogs/aquarium/fin-rot), the best thing to do is a tank cleaning and then treating with fish safe antibiotics (the only one's I could find are these from PetSmart https://www.petsmart.com/fish/food-and-care/disease-treatment/api-e.m.-erythromycin-fish-bacterial-infection-treatment-5113625.html). Hope this is helpful  :valentine:

I got my brother to clean the tank, and I'll check that out. :)

Please don’t use those antibiotics, they could kill the beneficial bacteria in your tank and stall your cycle, making the problem worse.

It’s probably an issue with water quality—I would do 50% water changes every other day until the problem goes away. With a tank that full staying on top of cleaning is crucial.

Okay, thanks!

It's my brother that normally feeds the fish/cleans the fish tank, I'll need to tell him.

Hiyo people! My sister (who's kind of a little bit of a fish nerd + owns 3 bettas right now and has had guppies) can help you. She's a member on Fishlore, too lol. Her bettas have had fin rot before, so here's what she has to say :D

Hi there. I would start by keeping the water really clean with a 25-30% water changes every other day and, if you have them or can get a hold of them, maybe add a few Indian almond leaves. The tannins from the leaves will leech out into the water and improve your betta's overall health, boost his immune system, and possibly help prevent fin rot in the future. They're good for the guppies too. Don't worry, the fin rot won't effect the guppies if you keep the water clean.

Hi! Do you have a water test kit/test strips? (I know I'm a bit late with answering) Those are really helpful to know your water quality. Just keeping the water quality top notch is one of the best ways to heal fin rot like other members have said above. One of my bettas has a ripped fin and I'm doing 25-30% water changes daily- his fins are growing back quickly. You can also use stress coat to help with stress in the tank. (API stress coat, 2.5 mL for 5 gallons but you can double it if your fish also has ripped fins) I hope this helped! :)

So....one of the guppies died yesterday. Reason is unknown, he was about 2 years old so might be age. Could this worsen the fin rot because I don't do a full clean and there might be something that killed the guppy worsening the betta's conditions?
