Just a note, please only answer the following if you have a cat or have had one in the past (or done research) Thank you!

So basically I want a cat one day, I met my aunt's cat and now can't stop thinking about them... I probably will never get one (as long as I live with my parents...) but I just am curious! So here are my questions...

1. I have no idea about cat diets, so whats better dry or wet food and if so is there any well known and good brands for cat food that I should know about?

2. There are really young kids and a dog in this house, do you know of any really friendly cat breeds?

3. Best grooming brushes for cats?

4. Suggested cat trees, toys, etc?

5. Indoor cat breeds (I'm too worried about the dangers of outside for a cat...)?

6. Anything you'd like to add for me to know? :)

Thanks so much in advance!!!!

The ONLY things I know about cats are that (as with all animals) I would suggest rescuing/adopting. Aside from that, wet food is 100% a need because in the wild they get most of there liquids from meat. Declawing is super unethical, and I would keep them inside unless you can provide supervised outdoor time.

Just a note, please only answer the following if you have a cat or have had one in the past (or done research) Thank you! I currently have five cats, all indoors. I also care for a small group of stray cats. :goodvibes:

So basically I want a cat one day, I met my aunt's cat and now can't stop thinking about them... I probably will never get one (as long as I live with my parents...) but I just am curious! So here are my questions...

1. I have no idea about cat diets, so whats better dry or wet food and if so is there any well known and good brands for cat food that I should know about?
Cats shouldn’t eat just dry food. They don’t get enough water that way and that can lead to issues with their kidneys and other problems.

2. There are really young kids and a dog in this house, do you know of any really friendly cat breeds?
Cat breeds are definitely not as varied as dog breeds. While having a dachshund and a golden retriever are two very different experiences, it’s just not like that with cats. I would strongly recommend getting a shelter cat. There are so many that need homes, especially during kitten season.

3. Best grooming brushes for cats?
I don’t have any recommendations, sorry.

4. Suggested cat trees, toys, etc?
Definitely get a cat tree/scratching post, if not multiple. Cats need somewhere appropriate to scratch so they’ll leave your furniture alone. I would also get different varieties of toys to see what your cat likes. My cats’ favorites are wand toys, crinkly balls, and springs.

5. Indoor cat breeds (I'm too worried about the dangers of outside for a cat...)?
Again, check out your local shelter. They’ll likely have plenty of cats to choose from. I do like that you’re going to keep them inside though. :)

6. Anything you'd like to add for me to know? :)
I’d consider getting two, especially if you’re planning of getting a kitten. Those guys are full of energy and they can burn it off playing with each other. Also, definitely don’t declaw them. It involves cutting off a part of their bone and there are solutions to get them to stop scratching things (like getting them cat trees/scratching posts).

Thanks so much in advance!!!!

I'm totally adopting (sorry I should have added that in my original post!!!), I was just wondering in general so I could look for a cat that might be better suited to my family style (for the cat not us)

As for de-clawing I'm also super agaisnt de-barking as well and would never even consider de-clawing a cat, I agree 100% that it should be made illegal. Thanks for the advice, that was super helpful!

Just a note, please only answer the following if you have a cat or have had one in the past (or done research) Thank you! I've done tons of research, and my aunt/uncle have a cat that I care for sometimes!

Cats shouldn't eat dry food. The don't get enough water. I'd feed a cat a raw diet, since it has so many more benifits. The water content can help with their kidneys, coat and nails!

2. There are really young kids and a dog in this house, do you know of any really friendly cat breeds?

They don't usually vary by breed. Try to adopt or rehome.

3. Best grooming brushes for cats?

the small pet select brush is really good my aunt uses it. also furminator.

4. Suggested cat trees, toys, etc?

I'd recommend at least 1 scratching post in a room to make sure they won't kill your furniture. One large cat tree and multiple scratching posts should be sufficient depending on the space. My aunt's cat likes their cat wheel. They also like balls with bells in them. Try to get both independent and human interaction toys.

5. Indoor cat breeds (I'm too worried about the dangers of outside for a cat...)?

Do keep any cat indoors. Check your shelter nearby, cat rescue, petfinder, adopt a pet, etc.

6. Anything you'd like to add for me to know? :)

Raw diets are best imo.

Pairs or more is the best from what I know.

Cat wheels are super fun! It's like a hamster wheel for a cat!

I'd say don't let your cat outdoors unless on a harness...i don't like the idea of outdoor cats.

adopt or rehome.

again raw diet lol.

Thanks so much in advance!!!!

I personally believe in a raw food diet; but wet food works too. Tiki cat, Ziwi Peak, and Hound&Gatos are all good wet food brands to try. Foods like Smalls and Nom Nom are also great.

2. There are really young kids and a dog in this house, do you know of any really friendly cat breeds?

I wouldn't necessarily rely on the breed of the cat, and on petfinder theres an option to filter by 'good with kids' which is way more reliable than assuming 'breed personalities'.

3. Best grooming brushes for cats?

Any brushes work, but this is a nice one:SAFARI Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush for Cats - Chewy.com :)

4. Suggested cat trees, toys, etc?

Taller the better. You can also install cat shelves to your walls like:Cat Wall Shelves Set with 3 Steps size M and 3 Shelves for | Etsy Create a space where only your cat can go to, so if they ever feel like everythings too much they can chill there and feel safe knowing that no one can invade their privacy in that specific area.

5. Indoor cat breeds (I'm too worried about the dangers of outside for a cat...)?

Any really. Some are really enegetic and need to be taken on walks, but when adopting a cat you can ask.

6. Anything you'd like to add for me to know? :)

kittens need to be in pairs of at least 2, as they get bored and need playmates :)

Thanks so much in advance!!!!

1. I have no idea about cat diets, so whats better dry or wet food and if so is there any well known and good brands for cat food that I should know about?

Dry food isn't the best for cats as it doesn't contain enough water for them. Wet food is good, but raw food is the best.

2. There are really young kids and a dog in this house, do you know of any really friendly cat breeds?

You can go on Petfinder and look for a cat that is good with kids and dogs

3. Best grooming brushes for cats?

I find that this brush is good.https://www.amazon.com/Hertzko-Self-Cleaning-Slicker-Brush/dp/B00ZGPI3OY/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3VZK5OZZHKSEU&dchild=1&keywords=hertzko+self+cleaning+slicker&qid

4. Suggested cat trees, toys, etc?

I'd say shelves are great for cats as they can climb on them and they're cheaper than cat trees. Don't get the shelves made for cats, you can just get some wood at a hardware store and some strong brackets. It works and it's money saving. And any cat wand toy will do.

5. Indoor cat breeds (I'm too worried about the dangers of outside for a cat...)?

Any cat that's properly enriched with things like food puzzle toys, shelves to climb, tall scratching posts (3 feet tall for adult cats), and playtime with toys everyday can enrich any cat so as long as you enrich a cat, it can stay happy inside, no matter the breed

6. Anything you'd like to add for me to know? :)

Be prepared to have the most effective alarm clock of the century and have a LOT of hair on everything!

Thanks so much in advance!!!!

You're welcome.

Cats in shelters are generally not any breed, nor descended from any breed. They're just generic cats, in long, short, or medium coats and any of the colors cats come in- a blue shelter cat is almost certainly NOT a russian blue, a large long haired one is probably not a main coon, a siamese-marked cat likely has no recent Siamese ancestry. You really only need to worry about cat breeds if buying from a breeder, or if there is one of very, VERY clear purebred ancestry like, a sphynx, or a persian- which are so visually distinct there's no question.

Unlike the advice the others gave, purebred cats DO have distinct traits and personalities related to breed, but you're highly unlikely to find them in your local shelter.

All cats can, and should, be indoor cats. If adopting from a shelter, you'll want to look for very young cats, and cats from housed backgrounds. A feral alley cat is unlikely to make a good indoor pet for a novice owner.

As noted above, cats need at least some wet food daily for good kidney health. The more of their diet that is wet, the better for them. 100% wet is ideal.

Grooming, depends on the coat type of your cat. A slicker brush of comb may be essential for a log hair cat, but completely inappropriate for a short haired one.

My cat is not very fond of playing with toys, but he has a favorite little teddy mouse which is his favorite. My cat has a very complicated relationship with other toys)
If we talk about the rules of behavior with cats, you'll get more information if you visit some blogs where you will find information about your breed of cat. Each species has its own rules of behavior, so be careful and follow all the clues. This way, you can better interact with your cat. This is my strategy.
